Use Sleep for a short break and the quickest return, Hibernate for a longer time away when you want to preserve your open work while using less power, and Fast Startup when you want to shut down and have Windows start faster next time. Fast Startup does not keep your signed-in session open.

How Sleep, Hibernate, and Fast Startup differ

Option What Windows saves Power while away Best suited to
Sleep Your current work and session, so you can resume quickly. Uses very little power. Microsoft says Windows can turn the PC off if its battery becomes too low. A short break when you want a quick return. Microsoft Support
Hibernate Your current work and session to storage. Uses less power than Sleep. A longer period away, especially on a laptop or tablet without a charging opportunity. Returning takes longer than from Sleep. Availability depends on the PC. Microsoft Support
Fast Startup Windows logs off user sessions and saves the kernel state in a hibernation file to speed the next startup. It is a shutdown path; the PC is shut down rather than left in Sleep. When you want to shut down and speed up the next boot, without keeping your open user session. Microsoft Learn

There is no universal resume time or battery-drain figure for these options: results depend on the PC and its settings. Microsoft describes the differences qualitatively, not as a standardized benchmark.

Which option should you choose?

  • Stepping away briefly: choose Sleep for convenience and a quick return.
  • Leaving a laptop unplugged for longer: choose Hibernate if it is available and you want to return to the same open work while using less power than Sleep.
  • Finished for now and want Windows to start faster next time: shut down with Fast Startup enabled. It does not preserve your open user session.
  • You want a fresh boot: choose Restart. Microsoft documents Restart as a full boot cycle, unlike the hibernation-file shutdown path used by Fast Startup. Microsoft Learn

Set screen, sleep, and hibernate timeouts

Windows 11 places the available timeout controls in Settings. What appears and what the defaults are can vary with device capabilities and power-state implementation.

Enable Hibernate or change the power button and lid actions

Hibernate is not available on every PC. If your device supports it but the option is hidden, add it through Control Panel:

  1. Search for and open Control Panel.
  2. Go to System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Under Shutdown settings, select Hibernate if it appears, then save the changes. You can then choose Start > Power > Hibernate. Microsoft Support

The same Power Options page lets you choose what pressing the power button or closing a laptop lid does. The available actions vary by device. If Hibernate is not listed, the PC may not support or expose the option.

If a device does not work after waking

If an external monitor, printer, scanner, or other device misbehaves after waking from Sleep or Hibernate, Microsoft advises reconnecting it or restarting the PC, and checking for current drivers. Microsoft Support
