A “true native app” has no single universal definition. In general technical usage, it is software built or compiled for a particular platform. In the OAuth standard RFC 8252, however, “native app” means an app installed on a device, and that standard includes some apps built with web technologies. So installation alone does not prove that an app’s interface is implemented entirely with native platform components.

What does “native app” mean?

The phrase depends on the context. MDN’s general glossary describes native software as compiled for its target hardware or software environment. In this broad technical sense, the key question is whether the software is made for the platform it targets.

RFC 8252, Section 3, uses a different definition for OAuth: a native app is “an app or application that is installed by the user to their device, as distinct from a web app that runs in the browser context only.” This is a standards-specific definition, not a universal test of how every part of an app is implemented.

How is a native app different from a web app?

A browser-only web app runs in the browser context and does not need to be installed as a device app. It can still be designed to look and behave like one. Apple’s archived Safari guide describes how a web application can be configured to resemble a native app when saved to the iOS Home Screen. An app-like appearance, therefore, does not establish that an app was built or compiled for the platform.

Native apps and browser experiences can also be connected rather than mutually exclusive. Apple’s associated domains documentation explains how a website can be associated with an app; users who do not have the app can access the same information in a browser.

Can a native app contain web content?

Yes. An installed app can combine platform code with web-rendered screens or other web content. For example, Android supports displaying web content inside an app with WebView, as well as opening web content through Custom Tabs.

RFC 8252 also explicitly treats apps implemented with web-based technology but distributed as native apps as equivalent to native apps for that RFC’s purposes. That does not mean every engineering discussion uses “native” the same way. When the distinction matters, ask whether the speaker means installed and distributed as an app, or implemented primarily with platform-specific code and interface components.

How to tell which meaning matters for a product

For a practical comparison, separate the delivery model from the implementation:

  • Execution and installation: Does the experience run only in a browser, or is an app installed on the device?
  • Interface implementation: Are screens rendered primarily with platform-native components, web content, or a mixture?
  • Platform needs: Which device or operating-system capabilities does the app need?
  • Distribution and maintenance: How will the product be delivered and maintained across its target platforms?

The first two questions clarify whether “native” describes how the app reaches users or how it is built. The available definitions do not establish that native apps are always faster, safer, or better than web or hybrid apps; those claims require evidence about the particular product and implementation.
