If your Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer is not going to sleep mode, first check the sleep timeout—not just the screen timeout—and confirm the setting for the power condition you are using. If the PC sleeps but wakes soon after, investigate wake timers and devices instead. Windows’ built-in powercfg commands can help distinguish these causes.
First identify what the computer is doing
Screen-off, automatic sleep, and waking immediately after sleep are different symptoms. A display can turn off while the computer stays awake, because Windows has separate controls for those actions. A lid or power-button action is configured separately as well. Microsoft describes the distinction in its Windows sleep and power guidance.
- The screen turns off, but the PC stays active: check the sleep timeout.
- The PC never sleeps after inactivity: check the sleep timeout, then look for an app or driver requesting that it remain awake.
- The PC sleeps, then wakes quickly: check wake timers and wake-enabled devices.
- Closing the lid or pressing the power button does not sleep it: check the action assigned to that control.
Check the sleep timeout and power condition
Make sure you are changing the sleep setting, not only the screen setting. On a laptop, check both battery and plugged-in values; the relevant setting may differ depending on how the computer is powered.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Check Turn my screen off after and Make my device sleep after for both battery and plugged-in use, where those options appear.
- Set the sleep timeout to the interval you want. A screen timeout alone does not put the computer to sleep.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 page lists example original and adjusted defaults for Modern Standby and S3 device categories. They are documented values, not a guarantee of the settings on a particular computer: OEM configuration or a user profile may differ. For Modern Standby devices, the listed original-to-adjusted screen-off values are 4 to 3 minutes on battery and 10 to 5 minutes plugged in; sleep values are also 4 to 3 and 10 to 5 minutes. For S3 devices, screen-off values are 5 to 3 minutes on battery and 10 to 5 minutes plugged in; sleep values are 15 to 10 and 30 to 15 minutes, respectively. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings.

- Open Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Review the separate screen and sleep values, including the battery and plugged-in options where available.
- Set the sleep interval for the condition in which the problem occurs.
Microsoft’s Windows power guidance covers sleep settings for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Check what the lid and power button do
If the issue happens when you close a laptop lid or press the power button, inspect that action rather than relying only on the inactivity timeout.

An application or driver can request that Windows keep the system awake. To see whether Windows reports such a request, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
powercfg /requests
Microsoft documents this command as listing application and driver power requests, which can prevent the display from turning off or the system from entering a low-power sleep mode. Review any listed request to identify the associated program, service, or device. The output is a diagnostic clue; it does not by itself prove that every listed item is the cause of the symptom.
Avoid applying powercfg /requestsoverride as a first response. Microsoft documents it as a way to change request overrides for a process, service, or driver. An override can suppress a legitimate request, so identify the caller and understand its function before changing one. See Microsoft’s powercfg command reference and its guidance on system-required requests.

PC wakes up immediately after sleep: inspect timers and devices
If Windows enters sleep but the PC wakes unexpectedly, run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorspowercfg /waketimers
powercfg /lastwake
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed
powercfg /waketimerslists active wake timers.powercfg /lastwakereports information about the source of the most recent wake transition.powercfg /devicequery wake_armedlists devices currently configured to wake the system.
These commands help narrow the cause, but they do not guarantee that every firmware or hardware trigger will be identified. If a timer is present and the wake recurs on its schedule, Microsoft’s older support article describes turning off Allow timer for activation as a targeted check. The article also notes that other causes may be involved, so do not treat that setting as a universal fix: PC automatically wakes from sleep mode (II).

See which sleep states Windows reports as available
If the expected sleep behavior or options are missing, check the sleep states reported by the system. In an elevated Command Prompt, run either command:
powercfg /availablesleepstates
Or use the shorter form:
powercfg /a
Microsoft documents these commands as reporting available sleep states and, where possible, why other states are unavailable. Hardware capability and policy can affect the options a computer exposes; different PCs need not support or display the same states. The powercfg reference explains the command output.
If the cause is still unclear
- Check the computer manufacturer’s documentation for device-specific sleep behavior and supported states.
- Review relevant drivers and firmware, especially if the symptoms began after a device or system change.
- If an attached device malfunctions after waking, Microsoft advises reconnecting it or restarting the computer, and checking for current drivers. See Microsoft’s sleep troubleshooting guidance.
- On a work- or school-managed PC, ask the administrator whether an organization policy controls power settings.
Use the symptom and command output together: a timeout or button action points to configuration; a power request points toward an app or driver; timer and wake-device output helps investigate an unexpected wake; unavailable states point toward device capability or policy. These checks narrow the possibilities, but the documented guidance does not establish one fix that applies to every PC.
