You can sometimes stop a phone hotspot from turning off after inactivity, but there is no universal “always on” switch. Apple says idle devices disconnect from iPhone Personal Hotspot to save battery, while Android settings depend on the phone’s manufacturer, model, and software. Check the controls available on your device—and remember that carrier support and plan limits can affect whether hotspot works at all.
What “always on” can—and cannot—mean
A hotspot can stop being available or disconnect clients for different reasons. On iPhone, Apple documents automatic disconnection of connected devices when the hotspot is not in use; it does not specify a timer or describe a setting that disables this behavior. Google says its Android Instant Hotspot turns off when no device is connected. Neither statement establishes that every phone’s hotspot behaves identically or can be kept continuously discoverable.
Android phones may offer a setting to turn off the hotspot automatically after a period of inactivity. Whether that control exists, what it is called, and what it changes vary by manufacturer and model. A platform-level timeout documented by Android does not mean every phone exposes a matching user setting.

Keep an iPhone Personal Hotspot available
Turn on Personal Hotspot and manage access
- Open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot. Use the controls there to turn on the hotspot and manage access. Apple’s instructions are at Apple Support: How to set up a Personal Hotspot.
- Check the Wi-Fi password. You can set or change it in the Personal Hotspot settings. The hotspot’s Wi-Fi name matches your iPhone’s device name.
- Connect a client when you need the connection. Apple says that when Personal Hotspot is not being used, connected devices automatically disconnect to save battery life. Apple does not state a timer or document a universal control to prevent that idle disconnection.
If you want a computer connected and can physically tether the phone, Apple says Personal Hotspot remains active while the iPhone or iPad is connected to the computer over USB. This is a wired-use option, not a general override that guarantees wireless availability for every device. Apple’s connection guidance also notes that provider support is required, fees may apply, and the number of connected devices depends on the carrier and model: Apple Support: How to set up a Personal Hotspot.

Instant Hotspot can make connecting Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account or in the same Family Sharing group more convenient. It helps with connection setup; it does not disable idle disconnection.
Look for an automatic turn-off setting on Android
- Open Settings and search. Search for “Hotspot,” “Tethering,” or “Mobile Hotspot.” You can also look in the network or connection settings; the exact path depends on the phone.
- Open the hotspot controls. Look for a setting such as “Turn off automatically,” “Timeout,” or “Turn off when no devices are connected.” Wording and availability vary by brand, model, carrier, and software version.
- Change the control if it is available. Turning off automatic shutdown or choosing a longer timeout may keep that phone’s hotspot available longer. It cannot guarantee continuous availability in every circumstance.
- Test with a connected device. Confirm whether the client stays connected during the situation that previously caused the hotspot to stop. A setting may govern inactivity behavior without changing other device or carrier limits.
Google says Android Instant Hotspot automatically turns off when no device is connected. Its cross-device feature guidance describes requirements that include Android 11 or later and says the feature is unavailable on Android Go devices; supported functionality can vary by device and version. These details apply to Google’s Instant Hotspot feature, not necessarily to every manufacturer’s traditional portable hotspot. The Android Open Source Project documents a Soft AP shutdown-timeout interval through config_wifiFrameworkSoftApShutDownTimeoutMilliseconds. It also says maximum supported clients are bounded by hardware and carrier constraints. This is platform implementation documentation, not evidence that a consumer-facing timeout switch is present on every Android phone: Android Open Source Project: Wi-Fi hotspot (Soft AP).
Check carrier and device limits if hotspot is missing or unavailable
- Check mobile or cellular data. Turn it on if it is off, then revisit the hotspot controls.
- Check plan support. If the option is missing, dimmed, or unavailable, ask your carrier whether Personal Hotspot is supported on your plan and whether charges apply. Apple specifically advises contacting the carrier if Set Up Personal Hotspot is missing while Cellular Data is enabled.
- Check connection limits. The maximum number of clients can depend on carrier and phone model. On Android, supported clients are also bounded by device hardware.
- Identify the exact phone and software version. If you cannot find an automatic turn-off option, consult the support information for that model. A timeout menu or value on one Android phone is not a universal Android instruction.
