Yes—but “printed paper electronics” describes several different prototype methods, and not all of them use an ordinary printer. Research has demonstrated conductive inkjet patterns made with commodity printers, while other paper circuits use separately patterned paper-and-adhesive channels filled with liquid metal. Those approaches have different materials, equipment, and limitations.

What does “desktop printed paper electronics” mean?

It is an umbrella term for making electronic patterns or structures on paper or other flexible materials with accessible, desktop-scale equipment. The key distinction is how the conductor is made: it may be deposited as conductive ink by an inkjet printer, or formed by assembling paper channels and filling them with liquid metal. The latter is not inkjet printing.

How does conductive inkjet printing work?

The 2013 project Instant Inkjet Circuits, by Yoshihiro Kawahara, Steve Hodges, Benjamin S. Cook, Cheng Zhang, and Gregory D. Abowd, demonstrated conductive patterns on flexible substrates including paper and plastic film, using commodity inkjet printers and commercially available ink. Microsoft Research says the patterns became conductive within seconds without special equipment; the researchers also demonstrated sensors and antennas.

The authors’ publication-era estimate was an initial investment of around US$300. That is a historical estimate from the 2013 work, not a current cost quote or a reliable budget for reproducing it today. Printer and ink compatibility are method-specific; the demonstration does not mean every office printer can use conductive ink.

Multi-material inkjet research

Soft Inkjet Circuits, a 2019 Saarland University HCI Lab project, extends the idea to conductive and insulating inks. Its demonstrations use substrates such as temporary tattoo paper, textiles, and thermoplastic, with examples involving stretchable devices, e-textiles, and body-based or reshapeable interfaces. These are research prototypes; the project page does not establish that a corresponding consumer product is currently available.

How do liquid-metal paper channels differ?

The 2015 Liquid on Paper study describes a different fabrication route. Layers of printing paper and double-sided adhesive are patterned and assembled to create microchannels, then liquid metal is injected into those channels. The reported prototype used laser patterning; the authors also note that manual knife cutting had been possible in earlier work. Copper conducting tape served as electrodes at the channel openings.

The paper-channel conductors maintained conductivity while bent through angles from 0 to 180 degrees. After 1,000 bend-and-release cycles at 90 degrees, the authors observed no significant irreversible increase in resistance for the tested conductors. This durability result applies to those tested liquid-metal channels; it should not be treated as a general reliability guarantee for paper electronics.

What about desktop liquid-metal dispensing?

A separate 2013 study, Direct Desktop Printed-Circuits-on-Paper Flexible Electronics, describes a desktop dispenser for placing liquid-metal traces on coated paper, with silicone rubber used for insulation or encapsulation. The authors identify liquid-metal surface tension and adhesion as technical challenges. This is another research prototype, not evidence that a standard office inkjet printer can print liquid metal.

How do the methods compare?

Method Equipment and process Materials and substrates Reported results Evidence and availability
Commodity inkjet circuits Commodity inkjet printer; prints conductive patterns without special equipment in the 2013 demonstration. Commercially available conductive ink; paper and plastic film among the demonstrated flexible substrates. Conductivity emerged within seconds; sensors and antennas were demonstrated. No resolution or durability figure is stated in the cited summary. Research demonstration. The approximately US$300 initial investment is a publication-era estimate, not current pricing.
Soft Inkjet Circuits Multi-material inkjet research using conductive and insulating inks. Demonstrated on temporary tattoo paper, textiles, and thermoplastic. Examples include stretchable devices, e-textiles, and body-based or reshapeable interfaces; a comparable resolution or durability figure is not stated on the project page. Research project; current consumer-product availability is not established.
Liquid-metal paper channels Pattern and assemble paper-and-adhesive layers, then inject liquid metal; the reported prototype used laser patterning. Printing paper, double-sided adhesive, liquid metal, and copper conducting tape electrodes. Approximately 200 μm minimum line width and spacing; 30-minute lab-bench fabrication; tested conductors showed no significant irreversible resistance increase after 1,000 bend-and-release cycles at 90 degrees. Research prototype. Measurements apply to this channel construction, not inkjet printing or paper circuits generally.
Desktop liquid-metal dispenser Desktop dispenser deposits traces; silicone rubber is used for insulation or encapsulation. Coated paper and silicone rubber, with liquid metal traces. The study identifies surface tension and adhesion as technical challenges; a comparable resolution or durability figure is not stated in the cited source. Research prototype; not an ordinary inkjet-printer workflow.

The studies do not provide a controlled, head-to-head comparison, so the table should be read as a map of distinct research workflows rather than a ranking.

Can you make one at home?

The studies establish that desktop-scale paper electronics are possible, but they do not establish a universal, ready-to-follow DIY recipe. A conductive inkjet approach depends on compatible printer and ink materials. The liquid-metal channel approach requires patterned and assembled layers, an injection step, and appropriate fabrication materials; it is not achieved by loading liquid metal into a printer cartridge.

For an educational LED activity, copper conducting tape can serve as a connection or electrode material, and LEDs and button or coin-cell batteries are reasonable supporting components. Copper tape is not itself the liquid metal or conductive ink used to make the traces in the cited methods. The cited studies do not prescribe a standardized shopping list or establish current product availability.

What can these prototypes do—and what remains uncertain?

Reported demonstrations span sensors, antennas, LEDs, button-battery circuits, pressure sensing, liquid displacement, stretchable devices, and e-textiles. They show why paper and flexible substrates are useful for experimental interfaces, but they do not establish broad consumer reliability, present-day cost, or compatibility across printers and materials. The strongest quantitative bending result here belongs specifically to the 2015 liquid-metal channel prototype.
