flet-media-library is an open-source service extension that gives a Python/Flet app an interface to device media libraries on Android and iOS. Its author, Faizan Gondal, describes it as a bridge from Python through Flutter to native media components, intended to reduce the repeated work of handling permissions, albums, assets, thumbnails, and saving files. It does not make the platforms identical: the project article identifies audio saving as Android-only and advises checking feature capabilities before relying on an operation.

Why a Flet app needs a media-library layer

A filesystem write and a write to the system media library are not necessarily the same thing. A downloader may want a video to appear in the public Movies collection; a camera or editor may need to save an image to the gallery; a gallery app may need to query albums and media; and a recorder may need to save audio. The package author’s rationale is that ordinary filesystem operations do not by themselves provide the same integration with media indexing, library permissions, or platform media identifiers. These are the author’s explanations of the problem the library addresses, not independently tested comparisons.

This distinction matters most when an app must work with content users expect to find in the device’s Photos, Gallery, or other media apps. App-private files can be appropriate when content should remain inside the app, but they do not automatically serve the same purpose as adding media to a shared device library.

What flet-media-library is

Faizan Gondal describes flet-media-library as an open-source Flet Service extension with a Python-facing API for device media libraries on Android and iOS. The described path is Python/Flet application → MediaLibrary service → Flutter extension → photo_manager for common media operations, with Android Kotlin and MediaStore used to cover specific gaps. The package defines its own models so Flet application code need not directly use the backend package’s types. Read the project author’s explanation.

Why permission handling is more than a yes-or-no check

Media access is controlled by platform permission models, and permission can be limited rather than all-or-nothing. Android’s official guidance says Android 14 introduces Selected Photos Access, which lets users grant access to particular images and videos instead of all media of a given type. This applies when an app targets Android 14 (API level 34) or later. Android recommends the photo picker for selection use cases; gallery apps that use storage permissions need to account for selected-media permission and partial access. See Android’s Selected Photos Access guidance.

For an app, this means a permission response should be interpreted as a state, not a guarantee that every item in the library is visible. The project article says its service models states including granted, limited, denied, denied forever, restricted, and unknown, and provides permission checks and requests for images, videos, and audio. What the app can actually access still depends on the user’s choice, platform, OS version, and the operation being attempted.

  • Permissions: check and request access for image, video, and audio media, with multiple permission states rather than only granted or denied.
  • Library queries: retrieve albums and assets, with media-type filtering, pagination, sorting, filename/date/size/duration filters, and MIME filtering where supported.
  • Thumbnails: retrieve thumbnail data as base64 or use a cached path-based option. The author says the path option is intended to avoid repeatedly sending image data across the Python/Flutter boundary for large galleries; the article does not provide a benchmark for that rationale.
  • Saving: save images and videos to the system media library. Audio saving uses custom Android Kotlin and MediaStore code and is explicitly described as Android-only.
  • File operations: rename or move media where supported. The author notes that Android storage rules may require system confirmation for some operations.
  • Capabilities and updates: discover support for operations such as move, rename, copy, limited access, thumbnail paths, and change notifications, and receive library change notifications.
  • Errors: use typed exceptions for conditions such as permission failures, unsupported operations, missing assets or albums, invalid input, and platform errors.

How to add it to a Flet project

The package article gives these installation options and a dependency example. Check the live package instructions before building, because package releases and platform requirements can change.

  1. Install the package: run pip install flet-media-library, or use uv add flet-media-library.
  2. Declare dependencies: the article’s example uses flet>=1.0.0 and flet-media-library>=1.1.2. These are the article’s stated minimums, not a guarantee that the same constraints suit every project or future release.
  3. Register the service: create a MediaLibrary() instance and register it in page.services, following the package’s current usage instructions.
  4. Configure iOS permission descriptions: the PyPI project description calls for NSPhotoLibraryUsageDescription and NSPhotoLibraryAddUsageDescription entries in the iOS Info.plist. Use clear descriptions appropriate to the app’s actual access; these entries are package documentation, not a substitute for checking current Apple requirements.
  5. Check operation support: query the service’s capabilities and handle permission and unsupported-operation errors instead of assuming a feature is available on both platforms.

What the demo and testing claims do—and do not—show

The author says the repository includes a demo covering gallery browsing, albums, thumbnails, video and audio playback, camera capture, video recording, microphone recording, file operations, live updates, and a real-device smoke-testing sequence. That description indicates the intended scope of the example project; it is not independent confirmation that the package was run successfully on any particular phone, OS version, or device configuration. No comparative benchmarks or independently verified device-coverage results are established here.

How to decide whether this is the right approach

The library is most relevant when a Flet app needs to read from or write to a shared media library and the team wants a Python-facing service over platform-specific implementation. It may be unnecessary for an app that only needs app-private file storage, and it should not be assumed to eliminate platform-specific permissions or behavior.
