If Chrome feels slow, first find out whether the problem is the browser, one demanding tab, your computer, or the internet connection. Update Chrome, reduce unused tabs, and check its built-in Task Manager before deleting data or resetting settings. These checks are reversible and can help narrow down what is slowing things down.

First, work out what is slow

Notice whether every site is slow or just one, and whether other apps or the whole computer also feel sluggish. A single slow page may point to that site or your connection; slow browsing across sites may involve Chrome or limited computer resources. Google’s guidance also identifies connection errors and insufficient system memory as possible contributors, but does not give a universal performance threshold. Google’s managed-Windows performance guide discusses memory as one possible cause.

  • If only one page is affected, reload it and check your connection before changing Chrome settings.
  • If many sites are slow, try the browser-focused steps below.
  • If Chrome and other apps are sluggish, reduce competing work and consider restarting the computer.

1. Update Chrome

Chrome works best on its latest version, so check for an update before troubleshooting further. On desktop, open More (the three-dot menu) > Help > About Google Chrome. Install an offered update and relaunch Chrome if prompted. An update is a sensible first check, not a guarantee that every slowdown will be fixed. See Google’s instructions for updating Chrome.

2. Close tabs you are not using

Each open tab adds work for Chrome and can use computer resources. Google puts it plainly: “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” There is no single safe tab count for every computer, so close tabs you do not need rather than aiming for an arbitrary limit. Bookmark or otherwise save pages you want to return to before closing them. Google’s speed-up guide recommends closing tabs you are not using.

3. Find resource-heavy tasks in Chrome Task Manager

When one tab, extension, or background page is consuming resources, Chrome’s own Task Manager can help identify it. This desktop tool shows Chrome processes and their resource use.

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu.
  2. Select More tools > Task Manager.
  3. Select the Memory footprint column heading to sort by memory use.
  4. Review the highest-use entries and close or end only a task you recognize and can safely stop.

Ending a process can lose unsaved work, so do not stop an unfamiliar entry just because it appears near the top. Google describes this check in its Chrome speed-up guide.

4. Disable extensions you do not need

Extensions can add work to Chrome. Temporarily disable extensions you do not rely on, then see whether browsing improves. If it does, turn them back on selectively to identify a likely cause; remove only extensions you no longer use. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that every extension causes a slowdown. Google’s speed-up advice includes disabling unwanted extensions.

5. Turn on Memory Saver

On desktop, Memory Saver deactivates tabs you are not currently using to help free computer memory. When you return to an inactive tab, Chrome reloads it. This can help when many tabs are open, but the reload behavior may be inconvenient for pages you want to keep active.

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Performance.
  3. Turn on Memory Saver and choose a level: Moderate, Balanced (recommended), or Maximum.

Google says these levels change how readily inactive tabs are deactivated. Memory Saver is not available as a performance-personalization feature on Android or iOS. Details are in Google’s Memory Saver documentation.

6. Review page preloading

Chrome can preload pages to make browsing and searching faster. You can review the option in Settings > Performance. Preloading is not guaranteed to help every connection or device. Google notes that it may use cookies when allowed; it may also encrypt and send pages through Google to help hide your identity from the sites being preloaded. Decide whether the potential speed benefit is worth that trade-off for your use. See Google’s performance settings guidance.

7. Check the connection and clear only relevant browsing data

If one page is slow or showing an error, reload it and check whether your internet connection is working before clearing browser data. You can also try the page in an Incognito window to see whether the issue changes. If you have reason to suspect stale site data, consider deleting only the relevant categories, such as cached images and files or cookies and site data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To choose what to delete, open Chrome’s three-dot menu > Delete browsing data, select a time range and the categories you intend to remove, then confirm. Do not clear everything as routine maintenance: deleting browsing data can affect synced information on other devices and your Google Account when you are signed in. Check the selected categories carefully. Google explains the choices in its browsing-data deletion guide, and offers page-error troubleshooting steps.

8. Reduce competing apps, restart, or reset Chrome as a last resort

Close competing apps and restart

Running many apps at once can leave fewer resources available to Chrome. Close apps you are not using. If the computer itself remains sluggish or page errors continue, save your work and restart the computer; Google includes restarting among its page-error troubleshooting steps.

Reset Chrome only if simpler checks fail

If the slowdown persists after the checks above, restoring Chrome settings to their defaults is a later troubleshooting option. It is not a guaranteed speed boost, so use it only when simpler steps have not helped. Google lists resetting settings as an option in its Chrome troubleshooting guidance.
