An Amazon sales estimator can help you screen products quickly, but it cannot verify a competitor’s unit sales. Results depend on the tool’s inputs, marketplace, category, listing coverage, and time window. Use an estimator as a demand signal, then check fees and fulfillment economics separately with Amazon’s Revenue Calculator.
How Amazon sales estimators work
Most estimators use a product’s Best Sellers Rank (BSR)—its rank within an Amazon category—along with marketplace and category information to approximate sales. Some tools also ask for price or an ASIN. Because each provider can use different inputs and methods, estimates from separate tools may not be directly comparable.
Helium 10
Helium 10’s free Amazon sales estimator asks for BSR, list price, marketplace, and category, then returns estimated monthly sales and revenue. Helium 10 describes its basic estimator as rudimentary and cautions that a result based on BSR alone may not be reliable. Its Xray product research feature adds context such as keyword rankings, search volumes and trends, and estimated conversion rates; those are vendor-described inputs, not audited sales records. Learn about the estimator and Xray.
Jungle Scout
Jungle Scout’s in-app estimator asks for a marketplace, category, and BSR; ASIN entry is optional. It reports average monthly sales. For its Extension and Product Database estimates, Jungle Scout says it uses ASIN sales and revenue data from the preceding rolling 30 days. That describes recent historical sales, not a forecast for the rest of the current calendar month.

Pros of using an estimator
Fast product screening
A seller can turn a listing’s rank into a rough demand estimate without access to the seller’s actual sales data. The core workflows are short: select a marketplace and category, then enter a BSR, with other inputs depending on the tool.
A repeatable first comparison
Applying the same tool and settings to several listings provides a consistent starting point for comparison. Keep the marketplace and category consistent, and treat the result as approximate rather than as a measured sales count.

More context in broader research tools
Some product research suites combine estimated sales with other signals. Helium 10 says Xray includes keyword rankings, search volumes and trends, and estimated conversion rates. These can help frame a product’s demand, but they do not turn an estimate into verified sales data.

After estimating demand, sellers can use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator to estimate fees, costs, and revenue for FBA and seller fulfillment. It addresses unit economics, not a competitor’s actual unit sales.

Cons and limitations
The result is not a verified sales count
An estimator infers sales from signals such as BSR; it does not reveal a competitor’s private sales records. Helium 10 specifically warns that a BSR-only estimate may not be reliable. The sources cited here do not establish an independent accuracy percentage or margin of error, so avoid treating any displayed figure as exact.
A recent-sales estimate is not necessarily a forecast
Jungle Scout says its Extension estimate indicates sales over the prior rolling 30 days, regardless of where the user is in the calendar month. Its Help Center states: “The monthly sales estimate is not a forecast for how much it will sell in the current month, but an indication of how much it has sold in the last 30 days, regardless of where we are in the month.” The article was updated August 13, 2025. See Jungle Scout’s explanation of Extension estimates.

Some listings may have no estimate
Jungle Scout says its Extension can estimate sales only when a listing has a BSR in a parent category. If a result is missing, that can indicate a coverage limitation rather than zero sales. Jungle Scout explains missing sales and revenue estimates.
Different tools can produce different outputs
Estimators do not all require the same inputs or report the same period. One may request price and BSR and show estimated revenue, while another may focus on average monthly sales or use a rolling 30-day window. Differences between results do not, by themselves, establish which tool is more accurate.

Sales volume does not prove profitability
A product with high estimated demand may still have weak economics after fees, fulfillment, shipping, and other costs. Amazon’s Revenue Calculator can compare fulfillment approaches using product details such as dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges. Its estimates depend on the details entered; they are not a substitute for checking your own cost assumptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare estimator results
- Use the same listing. Compare the same ASIN or product listing wherever possible.
- Match the marketplace and category. BSR is category-specific, and marketplace selection matters to the estimate.
- Record the lookup date and time window. Distinguish an average monthly estimate from a prior rolling 30-day estimate.
- Check required inputs and coverage. Note whether the tool uses BSR, price, category, marketplace, ASIN, or additional context, and whether a parent-category rank is needed.
- Separate demand from profitability. Use a sales estimator for approximate demand; use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator to assess fees, costs, and fulfillment options.
- Investigate outliers instead of choosing a winner. If tools disagree, compare their inputs, periods, and coverage. Do not call one “most accurate” without a documented independent comparison on representative products.
When to use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator
Amazon’s Revenue Calculator is a complement to third-party sales estimators, not another way to establish a competitor’s unit sales. It estimates fees, costs, and revenue for a current or prospective product and can compare Amazon fulfillment with a seller’s own fulfillment. You can select a catalog product or enter details such as dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges. Use the result to test your own cost assumptions alongside estimated demand.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is an Amazon sales estimator?
It provides an approximation, not a verified count. Accuracy can depend on the tool’s method, inputs, marketplace, category, listing coverage, and stated time window. The sources cited here do not provide an independent accuracy benchmark or a universal margin of error.
