Buffer’s web composer can connect to Google Drive so you can browse and attach files while creating a post. This interactive picker is different from sending a Drive link through Buffer’s API or Zapier: API media must be publicly accessible without sign-in, and a normal private Drive share link will not work.
What the Google Drive integration does
Buffer’s Google Drive integration lets you open Drive from the web composer, browse files and folders, and attach selected photos, graphics, documents, or video to a post. Buffer uses Uploadcare to facilitate access to cloud storage; Uploadcare is the file-picker provider in this flow, not a separate Google Drive product. You need a Google account with Drive to use it. Buffer’s Google Drive integration page describes the feature, and its Help Center instructions explain the storage authorization.
Attach a Drive file in Buffer’s web composer
- In Buffer’s web dashboard, select + New, then choose Post.
- Select the social channel or channels for the post.
- Open the integrations picker and choose Google Drive.
- If prompted, sign in to Google and authorize Uploadcare to access your Drive files.
- Browse Drive and select the media file. Complete the post and publish or schedule it in Buffer.
Buffer’s cloud-storage picker is not available in its mobile apps. In an organization with multiple Buffer users, each person can access only the Drive account that person authenticated; one person’s authorization does not give teammates access to that account. The picker flow also handles one file at a time, and attached files remain subject to Buffer’s usual file type and size requirements, which may change. The key distinction is interactive account access versus retrieval from a URL. The composer can browse an authorized Drive account, but that authorization does not make a private Drive link usable as API media.

Why a regular Drive share link fails with API posts
Buffer’s API documentation says it does not accept direct file uploads for posts. Instead, the media asset must be available at a URL that Buffer can fetch without authentication, and that URL must continue to work through the post’s scheduled publication time. Buffer states: “Links that require a viewer to be signed in – for example a Google Drive or Dropbox "share" link – will not work.” See the Buffer developer guide to creating a post and the Buffer API media guide.
Zapier is an automation route Buffer documents for passing image or video media into Buffer, but it does not bypass the URL requirement. A cloud-storage share page may not expose the underlying media as a directly retrievable file. Check that the exact URL works without signing in and remains available until Buffer fetches it; do not assume that a particular Drive URL conversion will keep working. Troubleshoot the connection or attachment
- You want to select a file while writing a post: use the Google Drive option in the web composer and complete the Google and Uploadcare authorization prompts.
- You are using Buffer on a phone: the cloud-storage attachment picker is not available in Buffer’s mobile apps; use the web dashboard for this flow.
- A teammate cannot see your Drive: each Buffer user must authenticate the storage account they need to use.
- You are sending media through an API or Zapier: verify that the URL itself retrieves the media without a sign-in, rather than opening a share page that requires a user session.
- A scheduled automated post cannot fetch its media: confirm that the URL remains publicly reachable until Buffer retrieves the asset at publication time.
Remove Uploadcare’s Drive access
To revoke the file-picker authorization, remove Uploadcare’s permission in your Google Drive settings. This is separate from disconnecting a social channel in Buffer. Buffer’s cloud-storage help article describes the permission route.
