Tesco’s Bengaluru operation contributes technology, analytics and operational capabilities to the group’s retail work, including buying, pricing, supply chain, customer experience and waste. It is a significant capability centre, but the public evidence does not show that it alone runs Tesco’s data or makes its retail decisions. “Data engine” is a useful shorthand for this article, not a formal Tesco system name. What follows separates what Tesco has said about the India centre, when it said it, and how far each claim reaches.

What the Bengaluru operation is

Tesco says its Bengaluru centre was set up in 2004 to standardize work and build centralized capabilities and competencies, serving customers worldwide and colleagues across the group. The Tesco Bengaluru company pages list more than 4,000 colleagues across Tesco Bengaluru and Tesco Technology. Those pages carry no publication date for that count, so it should be read as an undated company figure rather than a verified current headcount.

Which capabilities sit in India

The most detailed public description of the work comes from a January 2024 interview with Prakash Mall, Director of Engineering at Tesco Technology, published by Dataquest. The interview names the following areas. Because it dates from January 2024, treat each entry as a description of that period rather than a confirmed current setup.

Capability area Named in the January 2024 interview as Decision domain
Product and supplier management Product and supplier management Merchandising and buying
Demand forecasting Demand forecasting Merchandising and stock availability
Trade planning Trade planning Merchandising and promotions
Tills Tesco tills Store operations
Fulfilment Fulfilment Supply chain
Online experience Search, product listings and baskets Customer experience
Data and AI engineering Data science and ML engineering Cross-cutting enablement

How the operating model works

In the same interview, Mall describes India as more than an administrative back office. He says the centre has functional ownership across parts of the value chain: commercial decisions about what and where to buy; supply chain and fulfilment; stores; online web, app and social; data capabilities; AI products; and services. He puts it this way: “A big part of service and operations is managed from the India centre.”

“Functional ownership” is the interview’s own phrase. For a reader, “contributes to” or “supports” is the more accurate description. Public material does not show which teams feed which global decisions, how Tesco’s data architecture is arranged, or how much of any outcome traces back to Bengaluru.

Group context in 2026

Tesco’s preliminary results, published 16 April 2026, say the group’s technology team has more than 6,000 experts and has doubled in six years. The team is based in the UK, Ireland, Central Europe and Bengaluru. That is a group-wide figure. It does not give Bengaluru’s share.

The same results describe an AI strategy covering customer, colleague, supplier-partner and operational-efficiency work. Named initiatives include supply-chain risk identification, markdown and waste routines, AI-led finance tools, and an integrated self-service business-wide data hub. Tesco says it is implementing the hub. The results do not attribute these initiatives to the Bengaluru campus, and they do not report outcomes from them.

Where the work shows up: decision areas

Merchandising and availability

The 2024 interview links analytics to forecasting, pricing and promotions, clearance and assortment. These examples show how analytics can inform buying, pricing and stock decisions. The public material gives no measured uplift or forecast-accuracy figure for any of them.

Supply chain and fulfilment

In January 2024, Tesco described optimizing transport and fulfilment operations. Its 2026 results go further, describing AI used to identify external supply-chain risks and opportunities so that commercial teams can decide earlier.

Customer experience

The 2024 interview covers online search, product listings and baskets, and discusses personalized rewards, recommendations and the shopping journey across channels. A January 2026 ET CIO podcast summary says analytics work is embedded in customer experience. Only that public summary is available, so this article does not rely on any further claims from the episode.

Waste and markdowns

The 2024 interview says Tesco uses forecasting and algorithms to reduce food waste and automate markdowns for fresh goods. It attributes to this work 89 per cent of food surplus donations going to more than 7,000 charities, which the interview equates to two million meals a month. That is a Tesco executive’s 2024 statement, not an independently validated current statistic.

Finance and enterprise data

Finance and enterprise data are the newest areas in the public record. The 2026 results describe AI-led finance tools and the self-service data hub. Tesco has not put numbers on either, so this article makes no outcome claims for them.

What analytics is meant to do

Venkat Raghavan, Group Director – Analytics at Tesco Business Solutions, is quoted in a Tesco Bengaluru LinkedIn post: “A dashboard gives you information. A cockpit tells you what to do.” This is a company social-media quotation of a leadership view. It describes an aim for analytics, not a specific deployed system, and the underlying news article the post points to was not reviewed for this piece.

Academic links

Tesco Bengaluru and the University of Birmingham have announced plans to explore postgraduate programmes in data science and AI, joint work, and possible student placements at Tesco’s India labs. The announcement does not establish that any specific programme is enrolling now. The company page does not state a date for it.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • Established: Bengaluru is a significant capability centre that contributes technology, analytics and operational work to Tesco’s group activity.
  • Not established: that Bengaluru alone controls Tesco’s global data, makes every retail decision, or delivers measured gains from any named capability.
  • Dated 2024 examples: the capability list, waste figures and analytics examples come from the January 2024 interview. Confirm current status before treating them as active.
  • Group-level 2026 figures: the 6,000-plus technology team and AI initiatives cover the whole group, not the India site.
  • Undated company figure: the 4,000-plus colleagues count is from a company page with no publication date.

When you read claims about Tesco’s India centre, check three things: the date of the statement, whether it describes the group or the Bengaluru site, and whether it reports an outcome or only an activity.
