You can usually restore access to Microsoft Store or a missing Windows 11 app without reinstalling Windows. Start with account and update checks, then use Store reset, app repair, or Library reinstall. Reserve Windows repair and reset options for broader problems or cases that simpler steps do not fix.

Choose the least disruptive fix for the problem

Method Best for What it changes
Microsoft Store Library A missing Store app when Store opens Installs the selected app.
wsreset.exe Store search or installation problems Resets Microsoft Store; it cannot make an app available if it is absent from the catalog or unavailable in your region.
Settings Repair, then Reset One installed app that is malfunctioning Repairs the app if supported; Reset may clear its data or settings. Controls vary by app.
DISM, then SFC Suspected Windows component or protected system-file corruption Repairs Windows files; these tools do not reinstall apps from Store.
Fix problems using Windows Update Persistent Windows problems when the option is available Reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
Reset this PC or recovery media Problems unresolved by less disruptive options Reinstalls Windows. Depending on the choice, apps, settings, and personal files may be removed.

If your work or school device is managed, an administrator policy may prevent a preinstalled app from returning. See Microsoft’s guidance on managing preinstalled apps before attempting more advanced recovery.

Check your account, the app, and Windows updates

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with Microsoft Store.
  2. Close and reopen the app that is having trouble.
  3. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and install available updates.
  4. Open Microsoft Store, select Library > Get updates, and install any available app updates.

These checks address common account, app, and update issues. For Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance on an app you cannot find or install, see “I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.”

Reset Microsoft Store when search or installation fails

If Store opens but an app is missing from search or will not install, reset Store with Windows’ built-in command:

  1. Press Windows+R to open Run.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  3. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft says it closes after roughly ten seconds, then Microsoft Store opens automatically.
  4. Search for the app again.

A Store reset does not guarantee that every app can be found or installed. Availability can depend on region, account or family settings, and whether the app is still listed in Store. Microsoft documents this reset step in its Store troubleshooting instructions.

Repair or reset one malfunctioning app

Use Windows Settings for an installed app that crashes, will not open, or behaves unexpectedly:

  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the app, select its More menu, then choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair, if available, and check whether the app works.
  4. If Repair is unavailable or does not solve the problem, return to the same page and select Reset, if offered.

Not every app provides Advanced options or both controls. Repair is the less disruptive first attempt; Reset may clear app data and settings. For Microsoft’s current steps, see Repair apps and programs in Windows.

Reinstall a missing Store app from Library

If Microsoft Store opens and you are signed into the appropriate account, select Library, find the app, and choose Install. This reinstalls the selected Store app; it is not a bulk restore of all built-in Windows apps. If Store is absent or will not open, work through the Store reset and Windows repair options instead of assuming Library is accessible.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when the symptoms suggest corruption in Windows components or protected system files—not merely because one Store app is missing. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM first, and wait for it to finish:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Keep the command window open until each scan completes. DISM obtains repair files from Windows Update by default; Microsoft documents an alternate source argument for cases where the Windows Update client is broken. These commands repair Windows files but do not replace reinstalling an app through Store Library. See Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker instructions.

Reinstall Windows while keeping apps, files, and settings

If Windows components remain problematic, check whether Windows 11 offers Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the device connected to power and the internet during the reinstall.

The option may be absent on a work or school-managed device, or on a system without the required Windows 11 updates. If you do not see it, use the other applicable recovery choices rather than assuming a setting is broken. Microsoft explains the feature in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Use Reset this PC or recovery media only if needed

Reset this PC is more disruptive than the in-place Windows repair. Back up important files first, and have your BitLocker recovery key available if device encryption is enabled. In the reset flow, the choices have different consequences:

  • Keep my files: preserves personal files but removes apps and settings.
  • Remove everything: removes personal files, apps, and settings.
  • Cloud download: downloads a fresh copy of Windows.
  • Local reinstall: uses Windows files already on the device.

Recovery or Windows installation media are further escalation routes for unresolved problems. OEM recovery media may include device-specific drivers and factory apps; follow the device maker’s instructions. A USB drive is relevant to bootable recovery or installation media, not routine Store reset, app repair, or Library installation. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options before choosing a reset or reinstall.

When a work or school policy blocks an app

On Windows 11 Enterprise or Education devices, an organization can use policy to remove preinstalled Store apps. If that policy is responsible, personal troubleshooting may not restore the app. The administrator must clear the app’s removal selection and sync the policy; the app can then be installed from Microsoft Store or redeployed through the organization’s management tool. Contact your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass device management. Microsoft describes this policy in its Windows 11 preinstalled-app management guidance.
