For everyday personal lists and Outlook-linked tasks, choose Microsoft To Do. For visual boards and team workflows, choose Trello. For tasks that belong beside notes and reference material, choose Evernote. These recommendations reflect each vendor’s documented features, not hands-on performance testing.
How the three apps organize work
| App | Task model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Trello | Boards contain lists and cards that make work and status visible. | Projects that benefit from a shared visual workflow, assignments, and board views. |
| Evernote | Tasks live inside notes and can also be managed from a central Tasks view on eligible plans. | Actions tied to meeting notes, project ideas, documents, or other reference material. |
| Microsoft To Do | Personal lists, including My Day, organize tasks for individual use. | Daily planning, reminders, and work connected to Outlook Tasks. |
Those models matter more than a generic feature count: a board can make a team’s workflow easier to scan, while a note-embedded task keeps its context nearby. For a straightforward personal list, a dedicated list-and-reminder app is usually the more direct fit.
Windows support and access
- Trello: Atlassian documents its desktop app for 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. It also supports current stable versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on desktop. Some Windows touchscreens may work, but Atlassian does not officially support non-mobile touchscreen devices. Trello’s browser and platform requirements.
- Microsoft To Do: Microsoft lists To Do for Windows 10, as well as Android, iOS, Mac, and the web. The cited setup page does not specify a minimum Windows version beyond Windows 10. Microsoft’s setup guidance.
- Evernote: Its task documentation describes Windows desktop workflows but does not state a minimum Windows version. Check Evernote’s current system requirements separately if your PC’s compatibility is uncertain. Evernote Tasks Overview.
Task controls and collaboration
Trello: board-based team coordination
Trello cards can have assignees and due dates. Standard adds advanced checklists, while Premium adds Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard, and Map views. The Free tier includes unlimited cards and up to 10 boards per Workspace. Trello’s pricing page also describes Power-Ups and integrations; some partner Power-Ups may require a separate subscription.
Evernote: tasks with their supporting material
All Evernote customers can create and complete tasks in notes. The central Tasks view and controls such as due dates, recurring schedules, reminders, flags, and assignment require Personal, Professional, or Teams. The task page says desktop task descriptions support rich text. If a subscription changes or is canceled, task creation and completion remain available, but most details beyond the title cannot be edited and the central Tasks view is unavailable.

Whether you're at home, in the office, or on the go, you'll always be able to capture your thoughts and stay on top of your daily routine.
Microsoft To Do: personal planning, with list sharing
To Do supports due dates, reminders, priorities marked with stars, steps, and notes. You can share specific lists, but Microsoft distinguishes To Do’s personal-work focus from Planner’s visually managed teamwork and organizational collaboration through Microsoft Groups. If a shared visual project workflow is central to your work, Microsoft points users toward Planner rather than presenting To Do as a replacement for it.
Outlook, Exchange, and note context
Microsoft To Do’s data syncs through Microsoft’s Tasks API and is stored in Exchange, integrating with Outlook Tasks. For organizational accounts, use and syncing depend on the organization’s licensing and an Exchange Online mailbox. This makes To Do a natural candidate when tasks need to fit an existing Microsoft account and Outlook workflow; it does not make it a visual team board.

Evernote is the closer fit when the reason for doing a task is recorded in a note. Trello is the clearer fit when the team needs to see a project’s cards, owners, and stages together. The three apps therefore solve related but different organization problems rather than offering interchangeable versions of one task list.
