When you blacklist a contact, the result depends on where you applied the block. The contact is stopped in that one service, whether a phone app, a messaging app, an email client or a business support system. Nothing in these products amounts to a universal block. In most consumer apps, the blocked person’s calls and messages to you stop reaching you, your saved contact card generally stays in place, and the services whose guidance covers notification say the blocked person is not told. Beyond those common threads, the details differ by product, and some of them change with operating-system version.
“Blacklisted” is the everyday word for “blocked,” and it does not name a single technical operation. This article does not assume a platform, region, device or administrator role, so it answers service by service and notes where the behavior depends on version.
Why “blacklisted” does not mean one thing
A block is a rule that a specific service applies to a specific identifier: a phone number, an Apple Account or messaging handle, an email address, or an email domain. Each service decides what that rule covers. A block placed in a phone app does not automatically reach a messaging app, a mail client or a company’s help desk, and a block in one of those places does not remove the person from the others. If you want to know what a block does, the first question is always which app or system you used.
What blocking generally does
Across the services covered here, five consequences recur, though none of them is guaranteed in every product:
#1 Best Overall
- Universal unlocked. Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
- Super-bright, super-smooth 6.7" display. See your screen clearly even outdoors in sunlight, and enjoy seamless views with a fast-refreshing 120Hz display.*
- AI-powered camera system. Take stunning photos in any light with the 50MP camera**, look your best with a 32MP selfie cam*****, and capture extreme close-ups.
- Superfast 5G performance. Unleash your entertainment at 5G speed*** with the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset and up to 12GB of RAM with RAM Boost****.
- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
- Incoming communication is handled differently. Calls may be declined, messages may not be delivered, and email may be moved to a junk or spam folder or held for review, depending on the service.
- Connected features may change. Location sharing, emergency-contact status and group visibility can be affected, but only in some services.
- Saved contact records usually remain. Blocking is not the same as deleting a contact, and it does not delete the other person’s contact card either.
- Notification varies. Several major services say the blocked person is not told, but not every service addresses this.
- Unblocking does not always restore what was missed. Some services say messages sent during the block are not resent, and others do not say.
How each service handles a blocked contact
Apple: Phone, Messages and Mail
Apple’s support documentation says that when a phone number or contact is blocked, the person may still leave a voicemail, but the recipient receives no notification. Messages sent or received through the blocked identifier are not delivered. Apple states that the blocked person is not told the call or message was blocked. Mail messages from a blocked sender are moved to Bin, and Mail blocking applies across the user’s Apple devices.
Apple’s personal-safety guidance adds three connected effects. Blocking can stop Find My people location sharing. A person in the same Family Sharing group may still see the location of the user’s devices in Find My devices, because that is a separate sharing relationship. If you block someone who is an emergency contact, that person is removed as an emergency contact, and Safety Check may prompt you to review other shared information.
Group conversations behave differently depending on the operating system. Apple’s guidance for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 or earlier says a blocked person can remain in a group Messages conversation and may still see your group messages, and that they are not notified of the block. Leaving the group creates a note that group members can see. If you run a newer system, check Apple’s current Messages instructions for your version before assuming the same result.

Google Phone app
Google’s guidance says the Phone app automatically declines a call from a blocked number. If visual voicemail is enabled, blocked callers cannot leave a voicemail. Calls received while a number was blocked do not appear in call history. Google notes that some steps depend on the Android version and on installed apps or features, so the exact menu names may differ on your phone. Google’s material reviewed here does not address whether the blocked caller is notified.
Outlook and Microsoft Teams
In Outlook, Microsoft says messages from blocked senders are moved to Junk Email. In new Outlook, blocking an account can remove it from the Teams people picker and from Teams search, unless you have interacted with that person in Teams before. A blocked user may still be reached by typing the full email address, but this is subject to tenant policies set by the organization. Blocking support for third-party accounts in new Outlook differs, so the Outlook version and account type matter.
Signal
Signal says a blocked person cannot contact you and cannot see your profile updates. Signal does not tell you when another person blocks you, and the same principle applies in the other direction. Messages sent while you were blocked are not resent after you unblock. Once you unblock someone, you receive notifications for calls and messages sent after the unblock.

WhatsApp’s Help Center says a blocked contact or number can no longer call or send messages to you. Blocking does not remove the contact from your contacts list, and it does not remove you from the blocked person’s phone contact list. The contact card is not deleted, so do not assume that blocking clears the entry from your phone.
Zendesk support systems
Zendesk blocklists are an administrative control, not a personal block on a phone. An email support request from a blocklisted address or domain may become a suspended ticket for review or be rejected outright, depending on the rule an administrator configured. Zendesk notes that channels do not all apply allowlist and blocklist rules in the same way, so an administrator should state which action applies and which channels it covers. A blocklisted user is not removed from tickets that already exist.

What a blocked person can infer
A block is not sent as a message, so the blocked person has to infer it from what happens. A call that rings and goes to voicemail may look like an ordinary unanswered call, and a message that shows as sent without being read can look the same as one the recipient has not opened. A missing call in a call history is not visible to the blocked person in the same way, since the blocked call never appears in your history, which means they have no record of it on your side either. Where a service states that the blocked person is not notified, that statement covers the block itself and does not stop a person from guessing. Changes in visibility, such as a missing location share or a missing Teams search result, can also prompt questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What blocking does not do
Blocking applies to one identifier in one service. It does not stop a person from using a different phone number, a different email address, a different account, a shared device or another messaging app. It does not change what the other person sees in their own app beyond what the vendor describes, and the documentation for these services describes product behavior, not a guarantee that a message can never reach you by another route. Anyone who needs to be fully unreachable must block across every channel they use with that person.

Before you block someone
Work through these points first, especially if the contact is a family member, a colleague or someone you share a group with:
Best Value
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Confirm which app or system you are using, because the block applies only there.
- Check whether you share location through Find My and whether that person is an emergency contact on Apple devices.
- Check whether you share a Family Sharing group, which can keep device location visible even after a block.
- If you are in a group Messages conversation on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 or macOS 15 or earlier, expect the blocked person to remain in it and still see group messages.
- If you administer a Zendesk help center, decide in advance whether a blocklisted address should be suspended for review or rejected, and which channels the rule covers.
- Record any messages you need to keep before blocking, because some services do not resend messages sent during a block.
After you unblock
Unblocking restores contact in the same service, but the effects are not the same everywhere. Signal delivers notifications for calls and messages sent after the unblock, and it does not resend the messages that were sent while you were blocked. For the other services described here, the guidance reviewed for this article does not say whether missed messages or voicemails return. Treat any messages that arrived during the block as potentially lost unless the service’s current help page says otherwise.
Because vendor instructions change with software releases, confirm the current behavior in the help page for your app and operating-system version before you rely on a block for a sensitive situation.
