When Teams can’t show your camera, the cause is usually one of five things: another app is holding the camera, Teams is pointed at the wrong device, Windows or the browser is blocking access, a shutter or privacy mode is closed, or the meeting organizer has turned off attendee video. Work through the seven fixes below in order. The first four take only a few minutes and resolve most cases.
Identify where Teams is running first
The right fix depends on how you use Teams. The desktop app and the browser version use different permission layers, and Microsoft publishes separate guides for work or school accounts and personal accounts. The personal-account camera guide is written for Windows only, so its steps should not be assumed to apply to a managed work laptop or a Mac.
| Your situation | Symptom | Start with fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Teams desktop app | No camera preview | 1, 2, 4, 6 |
| Teams in a browser | No camera preview | 4, 5 |
| Any setup | Gray screen, lock icon, or privacy screen | 6 |
| Any setup | Camera appears and disappears | 3, 7 |
| Teams camera works in other apps but not in one meeting | Camera control is dimmed or unavailable | 7 |
Microsoft’s work or school camera guide covers general checks, updates, a test call, and platform differences. It states that the test call is unavailable in Teams on the web. The personal guide covers Windows-only scenarios such as browser permissions, physical privacy controls, virtual cameras, and basic driver mode.
The seven fixes, in order
1. Close other apps that use the camera
Only one application can usually hold a camera at a time. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting page specifically advises closing other apps that might be using the camera, and it gives Skype and FaceTime as examples. Quit any other video-call software, close browser tabs running a video meeting, and check the system tray for conferencing tools that may still be running in the background. Then reopen Teams and test the preview.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
2. Reconnect an external camera and restart
If you use a USB or external webcam, unplug it, plug it into a different port if one is available, and reconnect it. Restart the computer if the camera still isn’t detected. This is a basic connection check. It does not show that the camera itself is faulty, and a new webcam is not a guaranteed fix for a Teams settings problem.
3. Install pending Windows and Teams updates
Outdated operating-system components and Teams builds can cause detection problems, especially when the camera drops out intermittently. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. In the Teams desktop app, open your profile picture, then check for updates from the menu. Restart after installing updates.

If your PC still runs Windows 10, note that Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Updates for that version are no longer provided through the standard channel, so an unsupported system may not receive the fix you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Check Windows camera permissions
Windows has separate camera switches for the operating system, individual apps, and desktop apps. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and confirm that Camera access is on, that Let apps access your camera is on, and that Let desktop apps access your camera is on. Microsoft’s Windows permissions page states that video conferencing apps such as Microsoft Teams are desktop apps that need this setting turned on. Browsers such as Microsoft Edge are treated the same way.

If the switch is greyed out, the device may be managed by your organization. In that case, an administrator must change the setting. Ask your IT team rather than repeatedly toggling it.
5. Allow the Teams website to use the camera in your browser
If you join meetings through a browser, the browser adds its own permission. Click the site information icon (usually a padlock or tune icon) to the left of the address bar, find Camera, and set it to Allow for the Teams site. In the browser’s settings, confirm that the correct camera is selected where the browser offers a device choice. Then refresh the page or rejoin the meeting. Changing a permission while a call is in progress often does not take effect until the page reloads.

6. Select the correct camera and check for physical privacy controls
Teams may be using a different camera, such as a virtual camera or a second webcam. Open Teams, select your profile picture, choose Settings, then Devices. Under Camera, choose the intended device and check the preview. If the preview is black or shows the wrong feed, switch to another device in the list and check again.
Next, look for hardware controls that can hide the image. Some laptops have a sliding shutter, and some have a dedicated privacy key or function-key combination. Microsoft’s personal Windows guidance notes that a closed shutter or privacy mode can make a working camera appear broken in Teams. Open the shutter and turn off privacy mode, then check the preview again. Exact controls vary by manufacturer, so consult the device documentation if you cannot find one.
Best Value
To test the camera independently of Teams, open the Windows Camera app. If the camera works there but not in Teams, the problem lies in Teams or its permissions. If it fails in both, the problem is more likely with the device or its driver.
7. Check drivers and meeting restrictions
Driver problems usually appear as intermittent detection or a camera that disappears after sleep. Open Device Manager, expand Cameras or Imaging devices, right-click your camera, and choose Update driver. For a driver that was recently changed, Roll back driver may be available under the device’s Properties. Microsoft’s personal Windows guidance also describes a Basic camera driver mode for intermittent detection. This mode can turn off advanced manufacturer camera features, so use it only if you’re willing to lose those features, and treat it as a device-specific option rather than a universal setting.
If your camera works in other apps but its control is unavailable in one specific meeting, the cause may be the meeting itself. Meeting organizers can restrict attendee camera use. Ask the organizer whether attendee video is disabled, because a dimmed control is not always a sign of a local hardware fault.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
- Settings are greyed out or managed: on a work or school device, contact your IT administrator. Administrators control the camera permission on managed Windows devices.
- The camera fails in the Windows Camera app too: suspect hardware or driver failure, and contact the device manufacturer’s support. Microsoft also recommends contacting device support when hardware failure is suspected.
- The meeting organizer has disabled attendee video: nothing on your computer will change this. Ask the organizer to enable it for you.
- A replacement webcam is being considered: try it only after the software, permission, selection, and privacy checks above have failed. Microsoft’s guidance does not recommend a specific model, and a new camera does not replace the Teams settings check.
Common questions answered by Microsoft’s pages
Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting page, titled “My camera isn’t working in Microsoft Teams,” says: “Close all other apps that might be using your camera (like Skype or FaceTime).” Its Windows permissions page, “Manage app permissions for a camera in Windows,” says: “Internet browsers, like Microsoft Edge, and video conferencing apps, like Microsoft Teams, are desktop apps that need this setting turned on.” These statements are the basis for fixes 1 and 4 above. Microsoft’s support pages reviewed in October 2026 did not show a publication date, so the steps here reflect their current wording rather than a dated version.
Menu labels in Windows and Teams change with updates. If a name in these steps does not match your screen, use the Settings search box and search for “camera” to find the current location.
