When Samsung Notes keeps stopping, the cause is usually a general app or device problem rather than a fault Samsung has documented for this app alone. Samsung’s published guidance does not name one specific cause for Samsung Notes crashes. The fix that works depends on what is happening on your phone, so work through the steps below in order: update the app and software, restart, check permissions and memory, clear the cache, and only then consider clearing app data. Clearing data is the step that can erase notes, so it comes last and should follow a confirmed backup.
What “keeps stopping” usually means
Readers describe the same problem in different ways. Some see the app close without warning, some see it freeze on a blank screen, and some get a message saying Samsung Notes has stopped. Each pattern points to a slightly different place to look, so note which one you see before you start changing settings.
Before you go further, write down four things: your Galaxy model, your One UI or Android version, the Samsung Notes version (shown in the app’s store listing), and the action that triggers the stop, such as opening a particular note, syncing, or handwriting with the S Pen. Those details decide which steps matter and are the same details Samsung asks for when you report a problem.
What Samsung’s guidance establishes and what it does not
Samsung’s general app-crash guidance, published on its US support site, covers Galaxy phones and tablets as a whole. It lists app and device issues as possibilities, including outdated software, a Play Store or Galaxy Store app that is not current, app permissions, and low available memory. It does not diagnose Samsung Notes specifically, and it does not give a failure rate for the app. Treat its list as a checklist of what to rule out, not as proof that any one item is the reason your app stops.

Samsung’s menus also vary by model, software version, app version and country. The US pages used here may not match the screens on your phone exactly, so use the menu names as a guide and look for the closest equivalent.
Troubleshooting sequence
1. Update the app, restart, and check permissions
Samsung recommends checking whether the app is current, reviewing its permissions, and restarting or optimizing the device when an app freezes or crashes. Samsung’s app-crash troubleshooting page describes these checks. Compatibility can also matter, because some apps written for older Android versions behave differently on newer software.
- Open the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store, search for Samsung Notes, and install any pending update.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Samsung Notes > Permissions and confirm the permissions the app needs, such as storage or microphone if you use voice input, are allowed.
- Check for a Galaxy software update under Settings > Software update > Download and install.
- Restart the phone fully (power off, then power on) rather than only locking the screen.
- Open Samsung Notes again and repeat the action that caused the stop.
2. Check device memory and performance
If the app still stops, the phone itself may be short on resources. Samsung’s Galaxy performance guidance lists outdated software, too many background apps, insufficient available memory, and temporary system errors as possible reasons a Galaxy device slows or stops responding. It suggests closing background apps, using Device Care to free memory, restarting, updating device software, and running phone diagnostics through Samsung Members where that tool is available. These are general performance measures. Samsung does not say that low memory causes Samsung Notes to crash.

A practical check: open Settings > Device care > Memory, and if the phone is close to full, free space before continuing. Then reopen Samsung Notes and test the same action.
3. Clear the cache
Clearing the cache is the first reset Samsung suggests, because it removes only residual files the app has stored temporarily. Samsung’s cache and data instructions describe cache as residual files that can slow an app or cause problems.
- Open Settings > Apps and select Samsung Notes.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Restart the app and test the action again.
4. Clear app data only as a last reset
Clearing app data is a different action from clearing cache. Samsung says it resets the app to factory defaults and removes personal settings and data stored within the app. Its crash guidance also warns that clearing app data can erase stored data and recommends backing up important information first. Notes that exist only on the phone are the ones at risk.

- Confirm that your notes are synced to Samsung Cloud or backed up, and that you can open them from another device or from the Samsung Cloud website before you continue.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Samsung Notes > Storage.
- Tap Clear data, then tap Delete to confirm.
- Open Samsung Notes, sign in if prompted, and check that your notes have returned before you rely on the app again.
If you cannot confirm a backup, stop at step 3 and contact Samsung Support instead.

Samsung Notes can sync with Samsung Cloud. Samsung’s backup troubleshooting page says sync can fail when the battery is below 15 percent, and it describes checking your network connection and the Samsung Notes sync setting at Menu > Settings > Sync with Samsung Cloud. Use these checks to confirm your notes are safe and to restore access after a reset. That page does not say that sync problems cause Samsung Notes to stop, so do not assume that a sync error is the crash.
6. Escalate with the details Samsung needs
If the app keeps stopping after the steps above, report the problem. Samsung’s crash guidance points to Samsung Members for error reporting and to Samsung Support for direct help. When you contact either channel, include the device model, the One UI or Android version, the Samsung Notes version, when the problem started, whether it happens offline or online, and the exact action that triggers it. Those details help narrow the cause, although Samsung does not publish a fixed diagnostic checklist that guarantees a particular result.

Notes on regions and versions
The instructions above follow Samsung’s US support pages. Samsung also publishes support content for other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, and menus, support options and app versions can differ between regions and carriers. If a menu name is missing on your phone, search the Samsung Notes settings for “Storage” or “Sync” rather than following the exact path.
Samsung’s support pages referenced in this guide reflected menus as of October 2026. If your Galaxy software or the Samsung Notes app has changed since then, the exact labels may have changed as well, but the order of steps, from least to most disruptive, should still apply.
