Many extensions that once filled every VS Code installation now have a built-in equivalent for everyday work. That does not make all of them safe to remove. A built-in feature usually covers the core job, but an extension may add languages, remote-window support, or a specialized interface you rely on. Treat the list below as a set of candidates to test one at a time, not a bulk uninstall.

Which extensions are on the list

The eight names below match a widely circulated roundup of extensions that VS Code now covers natively. The original article could not be checked directly, so treat the list as the commonly cited set rather than an authoritative ranking. Where a claim below comes from Microsoft, the source and date are given so you can confirm it.

How to test before you remove anything

  1. Check your version under Help > About on Windows and Linux, or Code > About Visual Studio Code on macOS. Built-in features and setting names change between releases.
  2. Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X (Windows and Linux) or Cmd+Shift+X (macOS).
  3. Right-click the extension you are testing and choose Disable. Then run Developer: Reload Window from the Command Palette so the change takes effect.
  4. Open a real project that resembles your normal work and use the feature the extension used to provide. Include any remote window, language mode, or large file you work with.
  5. If something you need is missing, re-enable the extension. If nothing is missing after several days of ordinary work, uninstall it.

The eight candidates

1. Bracket Pair Colorizer: built-in bracket pair colorization

Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code 1.60 release notes (August 2021) state that the built-in feature was implemented to address performance issues in the popular Bracket Pair Colorizer extension. The setting is editor.bracketPairColorization.enabled, and up to six colors can be configured. A later release turned colorization on by default, so if you see no colors, check that setting first. If your old setup used more than six bracket colors, the built-in version will not reproduce that palette.

2. Settings Sync by Shan Khan: built-in Settings Sync

Built-in Settings Sync syncs selected settings and data after you sign in with a Microsoft or GitHub account. It has boundaries that matter if you work remotely:

  • Extensions are not synchronized to or from SSH, dev container, or WSL remote windows. Install them manually in each remote window.
  • Workspace tasks do not sync.
  • Stable and Insiders use separate sync services by default, so settings do not carry across the two builds automatically.

If your previous setup stored settings in a private Gist, confirm that the items you depend on are covered before you switch.

3. Debugger for Chrome and Debugger for Edge: built-in browser debugging

The legacy Chrome and Edge debugger extensions are reported as deprecated, and VS Code’s built-in JavaScript debugging covers the common Chrome and Edge debugging workflows. The sources reviewed do not establish full feature parity with the extensions, or a complete timeline for their retirement. Check any launch configuration, source-map setup, or breakpoint behavior you depend on before removing them.

4. Auto Close Tag: native HTML closing tags

VS Code inserts the matching closing tag when you finish an opening tag, and it completes the closing tag when you type /. This behavior is documented for HTML. If you edit JSX, TSX, or templating languages, the extension may cover them differently, so test those files specifically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Auto Rename Tag: linked editing

With linked editing enabled (editor.linkedEditing), changing one HTML tag updates its matching partner. This is a separate feature from auto-closing, so if you used both extensions, check both behaviors. The documented behavior covers HTML; confirm that JSX and TSX files rename paired tags the way your old extension did.

6. Local History: Timeline local file history

VS Code saves local snapshots of files that you can compare, restore, delete, or rename. The documented defaults are a 256 KB maximum file size, 50 entries per file, and a 10-second merge window, and these limits are configurable. Larger files are not kept in history under the default limit. This is a local recovery aid, not version control: it does not record commits, branches, or messages, so keep using Git for project history.

7. HTML Boilerplate: Emmet

Emmet abbreviations and snippets are built in and enabled by default for documented markup and stylesheet languages. You can map them to other language IDs if you work in a language VS Code does not enable by default. Emmet covers standard boilerplate. A project-specific scaffold with your own file structure, component names, or team conventions still needs a snippet collection or a template tool.

8. Git History: Source Control Graph, Timeline, and Git blame

Three built-in views cover what Git History typically offered, at different scopes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Source Control Graph shows repository commits and branch relationships.
  • Timeline lists events for the active file.
  • Git blame shows who last changed each line.

File-history comparison is limited to a single file. If you rely on a dedicated history interface or a broader workflow, such as comparing commits across many files, keep the extension.

Keep the extension when the built-in version is not enough

Removal is safe only when the replacement does the job you actually perform. Keep an extension if your work depends on remote windows that Settings Sync does not cover, on language modes that the built-in feature does not handle, or on an interface the built-in views do not offer. The built-in options are often good enough; the risk lies in assuming they match an extension you have never tested in your own workflow.

Defaults, labels, and setting names change between releases, so confirm them against your installed version before you uninstall anything.
