Microsoft’s public statements point to competition, not a single-vendor future: the company uses NVIDIA and AMD accelerators and is deploying its own Maia chips. Microsoft’s CTO has described large fleets from both outside vendors and said deployments depend on which option is most cost-efficient at scale. That shows AMD is competing for cloud AI workloads; it does not establish that AMD has caught up with NVIDIA across the market.
What Microsoft’s CTO actually said
In a transcript of the Cisco AI Summit, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott described the company’s infrastructure as including “gigantic fleets” of NVIDIA and AMD hardware, alongside Microsoft’s own chips. He also said Microsoft deploys whichever option is most cost-efficient at scale. These are statements about Microsoft’s strategy, not independent measurements of market share or a prediction that AMD will reach parity by a particular date. Read the Cisco AI Summit transcript.
The exact earlier statement implied by the headline—that NVIDIA rules AI but AMD will compete soon—was not verified. It should not be treated as a confirmed quotation from Scott. The available remarks support a narrower conclusion: Microsoft values having multiple accelerator options and chooses among them for its infrastructure.
Evidence that AMD is competing in Azure
At Build 2024, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described Azure as offering accelerators from NVIDIA and AMD as well as Microsoft’s own Azure Maia. Microsoft also announced the general availability of Azure virtual machines with AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators. That is concrete evidence of AMD competing in cloud AI infrastructure, not evidence that customers can buy an MI300X as a consumer graphics card or that every Azure region currently has it in stock. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The MI300X example is specifically about renting access to accelerator-equipped cloud virtual machines. Cloud availability and owning hardware are different choices: a cloud customer pays for access to infrastructure, while an organization buying hardware must acquire, host, power, and operate it. The Build announcement establishes the 2024 availability milestone, not present-day inventory or pricing.
Microsoft is also deploying its own AI chips
Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 earnings call said it was continuing to modernize its fleet with the latest from NVIDIA and AMD alongside its own silicon. The company reported that Maia 200 was live in data centers in Iowa and Arizona. It also said Maia 200 delivered over 30% improved tokens per dollar compared with the latest silicon in Microsoft’s fleet. That is Microsoft’s company-reported comparison against its own fleet baseline—not a neutral benchmark showing Maia 200 beats NVIDIA or AMD on every workload. - 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This mix matters because Microsoft’s approach is not simply “NVIDIA versus AMD.” Its first-party Maia accelerators are another option in the same infrastructure strategy, and the company’s reported economics are specific to its own deployments and comparison set.
How to compare NVIDIA and AMD for an AI workload
The Microsoft statements establish that both vendors are part of its infrastructure choices, but they do not provide a controlled, current NVIDIA-versus-AMD benchmark. For a real deployment decision, compare options on the workload and operating environment rather than assuming one chip is best for every task.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Workload: Training and inference can have different requirements. Compare the same model, precision, batch size, and performance target where possible.
- Cost and performance: Evaluate the economics of the complete deployment, including the amount of accelerator capacity needed and the cost of running it. Scott’s comments identify cost efficiency at scale as a factor in Microsoft’s decisions, but do not disclose a universal cost ranking.
- Software compatibility: Confirm that the frameworks, libraries, and deployment systems your team relies on work with the specific accelerator and cloud service. Microsoft has described managing a diverse fleet, but the cited remarks do not provide a detailed compatibility comparison.
- Access and availability: Distinguish cloud access from hardware ownership, and check current generation and regional availability with the provider. Announcements about MI300X in 2024 do not establish today’s inventory.
- Evidence quality: Treat a vendor or cloud provider’s performance claim as applying to its stated comparison. A broad claim about which company leads requires comparable evidence across relevant workloads, not one company-specific result.
Does NVIDIA still lead, and will AMD catch up?
The available evidence supports saying that NVIDIA is a major part of Microsoft’s AI infrastructure and that AMD has a meaningful place in its accelerator mix. It does not establish a market-wide ranking, a current performance gap, or when AMD might reach parity. Microsoft’s strategy is to use multiple vendors and its own chips, with workload fit and cost shaping deployment choices.
For readers deciding where to run AI workloads, the practical takeaway is to compare the specific accelerator service, workload results, software fit, cost, and current availability. Microsoft’s examples show competition inside cloud data centers; they do not settle the broader contest for every AI application or hardware buyer.
