TechJuice reported on November 11, 2024, that Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had issued a cybersecurity alert about Oracle WebLogic Server. The report identifies CVE-2017-3506, an issue Oracle lists in WebLogic Server’s Web Services component, and says administrators should update affected systems and strengthen monitoring. Oracle’s April 2017 advisory lists five affected releases and assigns the vulnerability a CVSS base score of 7.4.
What the PTA alert report says
TechJuice described CVE-2017-3506 as an OS command-injection flaw involving specially crafted HTTP requests containing malicious XML. According to that report, successful exploitation could allow arbitrary code execution; it also referenced prior activity by the 8220 Gang. Those details are attributed to TechJuice, not to Oracle’s version-and-severity table. The available sources do not establish whether exploitation is happening now.
TechJuice reported that PTA urged affected organizations to update, monitor for anomalous activity, use network segmentation and multi-factor authentication (MFA), and report incidents. The original PTA advisory was not available, so these recommendations should be understood as reported by TechJuice rather than independently confirmed from a PTA document.
Which WebLogic versions Oracle listed
Oracle’s April 2017 Critical Patch Update lists CVE-2017-3506 under WebLogic Server’s Web Services component. It identifies HTTP as the attack vector, describes the issue as remotely exploitable, and gives it a CVSS base score of 7.4.

This is Oracle’s affected-release list for its April 2017 entry, not a statement of current support status or a complete present-day remediation map. Administrators should consult current Oracle security guidance for the applicable fix and support decisions. Oracle’s advisory says: “As a policy, if there are any security-related issues with any Oracle product, Oracle will distribute an advisory and instructions with the appropriate course of action.”
What administrators should do
- Inventory WebLogic installations. Record the exact release on each server and compare it with the five releases in Oracle’s April 2017 entry. Include systems managed by other teams or hosted in separate environments.
- Check exposure and reachability. Determine whether HTTP-facing WebLogic services can be reached from untrusted networks. Use segmentation and access controls to limit unnecessary reachability while remediation is planned.
- Verify the current Oracle remediation guidance. Consult Oracle’s current security guidance for the product and release in use. Apply the appropriate update through the organization’s change-control process; do not infer a patch number or fixed release from the 2017 affected-version table alone.
- Review monitoring signals. As a prudent defensive measure, examine relevant application, system, and network logs for unusual requests or activity, and continue monitoring after changes. TechJuice specifically reported that PTA urged monitoring for anomalous activity.
- Follow incident procedures if suspicious activity is found. Preserve relevant logs and evidence, escalate through the organization’s incident-response process, and use applicable reporting channels. TechJuice reported PTA’s recommendation to report incidents, but the available sources do not identify a specific reporting route.
How to prioritize remediation
Prioritize systems by the combination of installed release, reachability, and remediation status—not by the CVSS score alone. An Oracle-listed release with an exposed HTTP-facing service warrants prompt attention, especially where current Oracle guidance indicates remediation is needed. Segmentation and monitoring can reduce risk during response, but they should not be treated as a verified substitute for Oracle’s prescribed update.
