There is no confirmed public explanation in the cited material for why AMD did not present the reported Radeon RX 7900 XTX/XT performance-per-watt comparison with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090. Tom’s Hardware reported that the comparison appeared to have been planned in presentation footnotes but was absent from the presentation. That omission does not, by itself, reveal the benchmark result or AMD’s motive.

What was removed—or not presented?

Tom’s Hardware reported that AMD removed performance-per-watt graphs from recent Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT presentation materials. The outlet also said footnotes in an AMD performance presentation dated November 15 indicated a planned slide comparing the RX 7900 XTX with the GeForce RTX 4090 for power efficiency, although that slide was not presented. The report supports describing the comparison as omitted; it does not establish what the slide would have shown or why it was missing. Tom’s Hardware’s report

Did AMD explain why?

The cited reporting does not include a confirmed AMD explanation for the omission. Any claim that AMD withdrew the comparison because of an unfavorable result, a change in marketing strategy, or another specific reason would go beyond the evidence available here. A missing slide is not proof of the cards’ relative efficiency.

AMD’s 54% claim was a different comparison

At the November 3, 2022 launch of its RDNA 3 graphics cards, AMD said the architecture delivered “up to 54% more performance per watt than AMD RDNA 2 architecture.” That was a generation-over-generation claim—not a result comparing the RX 7900 XTX with the RTX 4090. AMD’s announcement included internal-test footnotes, so the figure should be read in the context of those test conditions. AMD’s launch announcement

AMD partner material likewise described a 54 percent generation-over-generation improvement based on AMD internal analysis from November 2022. Its stated comparison was the RX 7900 XTX against the RX 6900 XT under specified system and power conditions—not against Nvidia’s RTX 4090. AMD Radeon RX 7900 Series material

Why power specifications alone do not settle efficiency

AMD lists the RX 7900 XTX at 355 W typical board power and recommends a power supply rated at 800 W or greater. Those numbers describe a board-power specification and a system power-supply recommendation; neither establishes how much performance the card delivers per watt compared with an RTX 4090. Efficiency requires performance and power measurements taken under comparable conditions. AMD’s RX 7900 XTX specifications

What a meaningful RX 7900 XTX–RTX 4090 efficiency comparison needs

A useful head-to-head result depends on more than the GPU names. Readers should be able to see the workload, testing setup, power measurement, and efficiency metric before drawing a conclusion.

  • Workload: identify the game or application, resolution, image-quality settings, and whether ray tracing is enabled. Results can vary by workload.
  • Test system: state the CPU, system configuration, and driver versions so the comparison can be interpreted in context.
  • Power boundary: clarify whether the measurement covers GPU board power or the entire system.
  • Metric: explain how efficiency is calculated—for example, frames per watt—and use comparable performance and power data.
  • Test provenance: distinguish manufacturer internal testing from independent, repeatable testing, and retain the conditions and caveats attached to each result.
