The documented issue affects the Technicolor TG670 DSL gateway running firmware 10.5.N.9—not every Technicolor router. CERT/CC says the device has hard-coded service accounts, including one with full administrative access. If WAN-side Remote Administration is enabled, an attacker who knows the account credentials may be able to authenticate through exposed services and change router settings. Check the exact model and firmware with your internet provider, disable remote administration if you do not need it, and ask whether the provider has issued a security update.
Is my Technicolor router affected?
The scope established by CERT/CC and the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) is the Technicolor TG670 DSL Gateway Router running firmware 10.5.N.9. The finding is tracked as CVE-2023-31808. The available advisory does not establish that other Technicolor models or firmware versions are affected. See the CERT/CC advisory VU#913565 and NVD record for CVE-2023-31808.
If you have a provider-supplied gateway, ask your ISP to confirm its exact model and firmware version; provider-managed devices may have provider-specific firmware and settings.
Can someone take over a TG670 remotely?
CERT/CC reports multiple hard-coded service accounts, including one that appears to have full administrative privileges. The account is described as undocumented and not removable or disableable through the device. Someone who knows its credentials may authenticate over WAN-facing services such as HTTP, SSH, or Telnet and modify router settings.

That exposure depends on Remote Administration being enabled. CERT/CC reports that the researcher observed it enabled by default, but that observation does not establish the setting on every TG670 or ISP configuration. A WAN-facing service being listed does not by itself prove that a particular router is reachable from the public internet.
NVD assigns CVE-2023-31808 a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.2 (High), with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H and CWE-798, Use of Hard-coded Credentials. The PR:H rating matters: the score includes a high-privilege requirement, so it should not be read as proof that an unauthenticated attacker can take over every TG670. NVD lists no CVSS 4.0 assessment. Its record was published on 2023-09-19 and last modified on 2026-06-17.

How do I reduce the risk?
Disable WAN-side Remote Administration if you do not need it
CERT/CC recommends disabling Remote Administration, also called WAN-side administration, when it is not needed. Use your ISP’s instructions or support channel to find the setting, since the menu and available controls can vary on provider-managed gateways. This reduces the documented WAN exposure; it does not remove the hard-coded account.
Ask your ISP about a security update
Contact the provider that supplied or manages the TG670. Give them the model and firmware version and ask whether a security update is available for your specific device and service. CERT/CC said it had not received a vendor statement and advised users to check with their service provider. That advisory does not settle current patch status across ISPs.

Do not rely on an ordinary password change
Changing the password for an account you manage in the router interface does not address the reported account if it cannot be disabled or removed through the device. Do not seek out or use the hard-coded credentials; they are not needed to verify the model, apply the mitigation, or request support.
Consider replacement if the provider cannot secure the gateway
If your ISP cannot provide a suitable update or help disable WAN-side administration, ask what secure replacement or service-supported option is available. Replacement is a practical contingency, not a requirement stated by CERT/CC; confirm compatibility with the provider before changing equipment.

Has my internet provider patched this router?
The cited sources do not establish patch status for every provider. SecurityWeek’s report from July 12, 2023 said the status was unclear at that time; that is historical context, not evidence that a patch is unavailable now. Ask your ISP directly whether firmware 10.5.N.9 has been updated or otherwise secured on your line, and request the current firmware version and recommended settings.
What the advisory establishes
CERT/CC released VU#913565 on July 11, 2023, and last revised it on July 12, 2023. It credits Florian Hauser of Code White with reporting the issue; the note is authored by Timur Snoke. CERT/CC’s mitigation is to turn off WAN-side Remote Administration when it is not needed. The advisory and NVD entry identify the TG670 at firmware 10.5.N.9; they do not provide a population estimate or incident count.
