On January 31, 2014, Yahoo said it had identified a coordinated effort to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts. The company said attackers were likely testing usernames and passwords stolen from another site—not credentials taken directly from Yahoo’s systems. The incident is a historical example of credential stuffing, not a current Yahoo security alert.
What was the Yahoo Mail account-checker attack?
SecurityWeek reported that Yahoo identified the attack on January 31, 2014. An account checker is an automated tool or script that tests username-and-password pairs against an online service. When those credentials have been stolen elsewhere, trying them on Yahoo Mail is a form of credential stuffing.
Yahoo said the list of usernames and passwords used in the attack was likely obtained by hacking another site and stealing its login credentials. The company did not believe the list came directly from Yahoo’s systems. The report does not establish which other site was the source.
How did the attackers try to get into accounts?
The reported method was to test stolen login pairs automatically against Yahoo Mail. It could succeed when a person reused the same password on multiple services: a password exposed in a breach at one site might also unlock an account elsewhere. SecurityWeek describes the method, but does not provide a detailed technical account of the attack’s infrastructure or confirm how it was operated at scale.

What did Yahoo say attackers were looking for?
Yahoo said the attackers appeared to be seeking names and email addresses found in the most recent sent messages of affected accounts. SecurityWeek described building a contact database and sending personalized attacks as a possible motive, not a confirmed outcome. The report does not establish what the attackers ultimately did with any information they accessed.
What response did Yahoo report?
Yahoo said it prompted users of affected accounts to reset their passwords, added measures to block attacks, and was working with federal law enforcement. Jay Rossiter, then Yahoo’s SVP of Platforms and Personalization Products, said: “Recently, we identified a coordinated effort to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts,” and “Upon discovery, we took immediate action to protect our users, prompting them to reset passwords on impacted accounts.” These statements appear in SecurityWeek’s January 31, 2014 report, which links to Yahoo’s original post, “Important Security Update for Yahoo Mail Users.” The report does not explain Yahoo’s additional blocking measures technically.

How many accounts were affected?
SecurityWeek said Yahoo did not disclose how many accounts may have been illegally accessed or how many login attempts were made. No incident total can be established from that report. It also speculated that a botnet might have been used if the attack was conducted at scale; the article does not confirm that a botnet was involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the incident teach about password reuse?
The central lesson is that a password stolen from one service can put accounts on other services at risk when it is reused. Using a different password for every account limits the reach of a credential leak. A password manager can help create and keep track of unique passwords; that is a general security practice, not a Yahoo-specific recommendation or a product tested in this incident.
