Those are different symptoms, and neither one alone identifies the cause. For a touchpad that is not responding, Microsoft recommends starting with Windows Update, then using Device Manager to update or reinstall the touchpad driver.
Work out whether the pointer or the touchpad is the problem
Before changing drivers, note what happens when the cursor disappears. Does it vanish only in one app, or does it stop moving whenever you use the built-in touchpad? Do taps or gestures still work? Is the touchpad missing from Windows settings or Device Manager? These observations help narrow down what to report, but they do not prove a specific cause.
- Only one app: Check whether the pointer returns when you move to another app or the Windows desktop. Apps can customize cursor appearance, so an app-specific visual issue does not by itself point to a touchpad driver failure. Microsoft Learn’s Touchpad interactions – Windows apps describes cursor behavior for app developers; it is not a consumer diagnosis of a missing Windows desktop pointer.
- Touchpad does not move the pointer across Windows: Treat this as a touchpad problem and follow the Windows driver steps below.
- Touchpad is missing from settings or Device Manager: Note that detail for the laptop manufacturer if the Windows troubleshooting steps do not restore it.
Update the touchpad driver through Windows Update
Microsoft identifies a missing or out-of-date driver as one possible reason a touchpad may stop working; that possibility does not explain every disappearing cursor. Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred way to update touchpad drivers. Follow Microsoft Support’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates, including any offered touchpad driver updates.
- Restart the laptop if Windows requests it, then check whether the touchpad moves the pointer normally.
Update or reinstall the touchpad in Device Manager
If the touchpad still does not work after the Windows Update step, Microsoft recommends looking for it in Device Manager. The device may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.

- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices. Look for the touchpad in either category.
- Right-click the touchpad entry and choose Update driver, then follow the prompts.
- If updating does not help, use Device Manager to uninstall the touchpad device, then restart the laptop. Microsoft says reinstalling it this way forces the latest drivers to download from Windows Update.
Device names and available options can vary by laptop. If you cannot identify a touchpad entry, do not assume that a similarly named device is the right one to remove; record what you see and ask the laptop manufacturer for model-specific help.
Use a separate mouse only as temporary input
A USB mouse can help you reach Settings and Device Manager while the built-in touchpad is not working. It is a workaround for navigating Windows, not a repair for the touchpad. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking a nonworking mouse’s connection and power, testing it on another PC, and using Windows Update or Device Manager for driver troubleshooting.

When to contact the laptop manufacturer
If updating or reinstalling the touchpad through Windows does not restore it, contact the laptop manufacturer. The manufacturer can advise on steps for the exact computer model. Microsoft Support puts the escalation plainly: “If updating the touchpad driver or reinstalling the touchpad doesn’t help, contact the Windows device’s manufacturer for help.”
