The “Printer Not Activated” message can come from different print paths, so the error code alone does not identify the cause. First note the full message and code, the application, and the exact printer selected. Then determine whether printing fails across Windows, in one application, or only when creating a PDF; the right fix depends on that distinction.
Identify which printer path is failing
In the affected app’s print dialog, check the selected destination. It might be a physical printer, Windows’ Microsoft Print to PDF, or a PDF printer installed by an application. Similar error wording has appeared in reports involving each of these, so do not infer the cause from the message alone.
If you did not intend to create a PDF or print to a file, select the intended physical printer. Microsoft’s app-printing guidance advises checking that “Print to PDF or Print to file” is not selected when that is not the desired output: Print in Windows.
Check whether the problem is Windows-wide or app-specific
- Try another application. Print a simple document from a different app. If only one app fails, focus on its selected printer and its own PDF-export setup.
- Print a Windows test page. If the test page and multiple applications fail, troubleshoot the Windows printer connection and driver rather than starting with one app’s PDF settings.
- Follow Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooting steps. Windows 11 users can start with the Get Help printer troubleshooter. Check the printer’s cable or wireless connection, install the latest driver for the printer, and, if those steps do not help, consider clearing or resetting the print spooler. Microsoft explains that “The print spooler is a file that manages the printing process.” See Fix printer connection and printing problems in Windows.
Microsoft’s current support page also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its printer troubleshooting guidance remains useful for diagnosing a Windows printer issue, but Windows 11 users should begin with the Get Help troubleshooter.

If Microsoft Print to PDF is selected
If the error occurs while saving to Microsoft Print to PDF, check whether the Windows feature is enabled. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Optional features and look for Microsoft Print to PDF. If it is missing or appears to be malfunctioning, use the Optional Features interface to remove and add the feature again, then retry the PDF output.
This is a troubleshooting branch, not a guaranteed repair for every “Printer Not Activated” report. Microsoft Q&A includes a PDF-saving case where a support answer recommends toggling or reinstalling the feature, but another user in that thread said the steps did not resolve their problem: Microsoft Q&A: Printer Not Activated – Error Code -30.

If an application’s own PDF printer is selected
Some applications install a virtual printer for PDF export. Repair that printer using the software vendor’s instructions; its driver or port settings are not general Windows fixes.
ProFile PDF Export
Intuit’s procedure applies specifically to ProFile. Close ProFile, remove the ProFile PDF Export printer, and remove the Amyuni Document Converter 550 driver/package through Printer Server Properties. Then run ProFile PDF Export’s Install.exe as administrator. Intuit also instructs users to check the printer’s Ports tab: the selected port should be NUL, and no other printer should share it. Sage TS PDF Generator
For Sage’s TS PDF Generator, Sage lists a wrong printer selection, insufficient permissions, or a damaged or missing installation among possible causes. Its initial diagnostic compares print-to-file behavior with printing to another printer. Use Sage’s product-specific guidance rather than applying ProFile’s Amyuni or NUL-port steps: Sage: Printer Not Activated.
NI DIAdem PDF Export
NI’s advice is specific to DIAdem PDF Export. Its troubleshooting discusses compatibility, Windows ports, and possible interference from external software. Check NI’s instructions if DIAdem’s PDF export device is the selected printer: NI: DIAdem PDF Export troubleshooting.

If a physical printer is selected
Check that the printer is connected, powered on, and visible in Windows. For a wired printer, inspect the cable connection; for a wireless printer, verify its network connection. Then use Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guidance to check the Windows device setup and obtain the latest driver for the exact printer model.
A Microsoft Q&A discussion of code -30 with a Canon printer includes a community suggestion to reinstall the Canon driver cleanly. That is one response to one reported case, not evidence that code -30 always indicates a Canon driver problem: Microsoft Q&A: Printer Not Activated – Error Code -30.
