Microsoft no longer offers a standalone download of Windows 10 KB5003173 through the Microsoft Update Catalog or other release channels. Its release page says that, as of September 12, 2023, the update is available only through Windows Update. The page recommends installing the latest security quality update instead. KB5003173 was released on May 11, 2021; build 19042.985 is its Windows 10 version 20H2 build.

Is there a direct download for KB5003173?

No current standalone download link is listed by Microsoft. Its KB5003173 release page says that since September 12, 2023, the update is available only through Windows Update. Microsoft lists the Microsoft Update Catalog, Windows Update for Business, and WSUS as unavailable channels for this KB.

Microsoft says Windows Update and Microsoft Update download and install the update automatically when it is offered to a device. That notice does not establish that every device can still receive this historical update, regardless of its servicing state. The page recommends updating to the latest security quality update.

Which issues did Microsoft document?

Microsoft’s release page records several historical issues and, for most, identifies a later update that resolved them:

  • Japanese IME Furigana: Some apps using ImmGetCompositionString() might not display the correct Furigana characters. Microsoft says this was resolved in KB5005101.
  • Game performance: A small subset of users reported lower-than-expected performance, mainly in full-screen or borderless games with two or more monitors. Microsoft says KB5003690 resolved this issue.
  • Dolby Digital audio: Certain configurations could produce high-pitched noise or a squeak with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. Microsoft says KB5003690 resolved it.
  • Taskbar text: The news and interests taskbar button could show blurry text on some display configurations. Microsoft says KB5003690 resolved it.
  • Custom offline images and Edge Legacy: Some custom offline media or ISO images created by slipstreaming the update without first including a sufficiently recent SSU could lose Edge Legacy without automatically replacing it with the new Microsoft Edge. Microsoft’s stated workaround is to include the SSU first. For an affected image already in use, the page describes installing the new Edge as mitigation.

These are issues documented for this historical release; Microsoft’s page identifies the named later updates as resolutions for the first four items.

Can you uninstall KB5003173?

Microsoft says to remove the LCU with DISM’s /Remove-Package option and the LCU package name. To find package names, its instructions use DISM /online /get-packages. Microsoft specifically warns that WUSA’s /uninstall switch does not work for the combined SSU/LCU package. The SSU cannot be removed from the system after installation. Consult Microsoft’s removal instructions before changing installed packages.
