If your Windows screen goes black while gaming, first check whether the PC is still running and whether Windows restarted or displayed a stop code. A blank display can point to a graphics-driver, game, or display-connection problem, but it does not by itself prove the graphics card has failed. Try Windows’ graphics-driver reset shortcut, then troubleshoot according to whether the problem affects one game, every game, or an external monitor.

First, identify what went black

When the display blanks, note what happens next: does game audio continue, does the screen return on its own, does the whole PC restart, or does Windows show a stop code? Also note whether this happens only after launching one game or during other tasks too. Those observations separate a blank-screen problem from an unexpected restart or stop-code event, which can have different causes. Microsoft treats them as distinct troubleshooting paths in its blank-screen guidance and unexpected-restart and stop-code guidance.

  • One game triggers it: Focus first on that game’s update, settings, and reproducible behavior.
  • Several games or the Windows desktop trigger it: Check the graphics driver and display connection.
  • Windows restarts or shows a stop code: Write down the stop code and any named file or module; troubleshoot it as a restart or stop-code problem rather than assuming it is just a monitor signal issue.

Try the quick Windows display recovery steps

Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once. Microsoft says this shortcut may resolve some display problems; a beep or brief screen flicker can indicate that Windows attempted the reset. If the picture does not return, restart the PC. This is a recovery attempt, not a guaranteed fix. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps.

Check the selected display mode

If you use multiple displays or suspect Windows switched outputs, press Windows + P to open display-mode choices, then select the intended mode. This can help when the image is going to another screen; it is not a general fix for a game crash. Microsoft documents this option in its blank-screen guidance.

Check the monitor and video signal path

If you are using an external monitor, confirm that it is powered on and set to the input connected to the PC. Reseat the video cable at both ends. If the screen remains black, isolate the signal path with equipment you already have or can borrow:

  • Try another output on the graphics card.
  • Try a known-good cable that fits the monitor and graphics-card ports.
  • Connect a different working monitor, if available.

Intel recommends these substitutions as diagnostic checks for black-screen symptoms; they do not establish a required cable version or mean you need to buy a replacement before testing. If you use a laptop, note whether the built-in screen, the external display, or both go black. Intel’s discrete-graphics black-screen troubleshooting describes connection and display substitutions. In the narrower case of a black screen after installing an Intel Arc A750 driver, Intel also lists BIOS and driver compatibility among the checks in its Arc A750 black-screen guidance; treat those as scenario-specific steps, not a routine fix for every gaming blackout.

Roll back a display driver if the timing fits

If the problem began after a graphics-driver update, use Device Manager to open the display adapter’s properties and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Microsoft says rolling back can help when a problem starts after an update. If rollback is unavailable or does not help, its external-monitor instructions include uninstalling and reinstalling the display driver. Do not assume the newest driver is automatically the right one for your system.

On a laptop, check the computer maker’s support page for a driver matching the exact PC model before installing a generic graphics package. Manufacturers may customize graphics configurations or drivers; Intel explains this compatibility issue in its laptop black-display guidance. Do not select a driver version without confirming that it supports your hardware.

If only one game causes the black screen

If Windows and other games remain stable, gather details that can help identify a game-specific fault: the game title, graphics settings, any error message, recent game or driver changes, and the steps that reliably reproduce the blackout. Check the game developer’s known-issues information and install an available game update. Intel also recommends testing lower graphics settings or windowed mode in some first-run configurations; its game-issue troubleshooting describes these checks.

Use a clean boot to test for background conflicts

If the problem may involve a background service or startup program, a clean boot can help isolate it. Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions start Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, then have you hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining services and startup apps, and test the problem. Keep track of what you disable. When the test is complete, restore normal startup using Microsoft’s instructions rather than leaving services or startup apps disabled.

If a stop code or restart accompanies the blackout

Record the stop code and any named module before restarting if possible. An unexpected restart or stop code is a separate diagnostic branch; Microsoft lists hardware, driver, and software issues among possible causes in its restart and stop-code guidance. If Windows reports error code 43 for a graphics device, use the applicable Windows support instructions for that code rather than treating every black screen as the same issue: Microsoft’s Code 43 guidance covers Windows 10.
