Don’t order a generic capacitor based on the card model or its appearance; first identify the exact PCB position and required specifications.
What is known about the damaged capacitors?
The AnandTech thread describes a Sapphire R9 390X Nitro 8 GB with two damaged SMD capacitors. It does not establish their capacitance, voltage rating, package, or board reference designators, so it cannot identify the replacement parts. Read the original discussion.
“Sapphire R9 390X 8 GB” is not a complete board identification. Card variants and PCB revisions can differ, and a component’s location on the board is essential to matching it. A separate report about a Sapphire R9 390X lists missing capacitors near U4016 (IR3553M), including C4105, C4106, C4108, C4109, C4117, and C4149, plus resistor R642. Those designators apply to that report only; they do not identify the two damaged parts in the Nitro 8 GB thread. See the separate repair discussion.
What information is needed to identify the part?
A repairer needs to connect the damaged component to its exact position in the circuit, then verify the specifications required there. Provide:

- A wider photograph showing board orientation, so the damaged area can be located reliably.
- The exact model information from the card label and any printed PCB number or revision.
With those details, a repairer can compare the position with an intact board of the same model and revision, or consult suitable board documentation. The replacement must match the circuit’s requirements for capacitance, voltage rating, package or footprint, and any other relevant characteristics. Appearance alone does not establish those values.
Can you measure or copy a nearby capacitor?
Only if the comparison is valid. A matching component at the same circuit position on an identical board may help establish what belongs there, but a visually similar part—or one on another PCB revision—is not proof of equivalence.

The AnandTech replies caution that in-circuit capacitance readings can be affected by parallel paths, and that a component may need to be isolated for a reliable measurement. They also note that some multimeters do not measure capacitance. Treat this as forum guidance, not a confirmed diagnostic procedure for this particular card. If you are not experienced with board-level measurement and soldering, take the PCB to a component-level repairer rather than testing or removing parts by guesswork.

Buy only after the component’s required specifications and footprint have been confirmed. The AnandTech discussion mentions DigiKey as one possible supplier, but it names no exact part and does not establish a current listing or stock. Search by the verified electrical specifications and package, then check the candidate part’s datasheet and suitability for the circuit. Do not choose a part simply because it is described as a capacitor for an R9 390X.

What to do before powering the card
- Photograph the damaged area and record the card’s exact model and PCB markings.
- Have the component identified from its board position and confirmed specifications, using an identical intact board or reliable board documentation where available.
- Replace it only with a part confirmed to meet those requirements, or have a qualified repairer do the work.
- Do not power the board while a short remains unresolved or loose conductive debris is present. The forum discussion also cautions that the short should be cleared before testing.
