Apple’s March 2025 Siri leadership change was a reported shift in oversight, not Giannandrea’s departure from the company. Reports said Mike Rockwell, the executive associated with Apple Vision Pro, took charge of Siri while Giannandrea remained in a broader AI role. Apple announced Giannandrea’s step-down and planned retirement months later, then previewed a new Siri experience in June 2026.
What changed in March 2025
On March 20, 2025, AppleInsider and TechCrunch reported that Mike Rockwell had taken over responsibility for Siri from John Giannandrea. Rockwell was then the vice president in charge of Apple’s Vision Products Group. The reports, which cited Bloomberg, described a change in who oversaw Siri—not Giannandrea leaving Apple or relinquishing all of his AI responsibilities. AppleInsider’s report and TechCrunch’s report were media accounts; the sources cited here do not include an Apple announcement confirming the March reorganization.
Giannandrea’s later step-down and retirement plan
Apple made a separate announcement on December 1, 2025: Giannandrea would step down as senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, serve as an advisor until retiring in spring 2026, and be succeeded in AI leadership by Amar Subramanya. Apple said Subramanya joined as vice president of AI, reporting to Craig Federighi. Apple’s announcement also assigned Subramanya responsibility for Apple Foundation Models, machine-learning research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. Other parts of Giannandrea’s organization shifted to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said Craig Federighi had been instrumental in the company’s AI efforts, including overseeing work to bring a more personalized Siri to users the following year. This places Siri’s development within the broader AI organization; it does not establish Rockwell’s precise reporting line or continuing remit.

What Apple announced about the next Siri
At WWDC on June 8, 2026, Apple announced its next generation of Apple Intelligence and previewed what it called an entirely new version of Siri. Apple said the experience would be able to use personal context across apps, take actions across apps, answer questions about what is on screen, and draw on information from the web. Those are announced capabilities, not independently verified performance results. Apple’s WWDC announcement described the new Siri as “profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable,” a characterization from the company rather than an outside evaluation.

The available sources establish that reports in March 2025 placed Rockwell in charge of Siri. They do not establish his exact remit or reporting structure as of October 8, 2026, nor do they show that he held a permanent, unchanged Siri role through that date. The March report should therefore be read as a snapshot of a reported leadership shift, not as a definitive account of Apple’s current organization.
