It does not identify the cause by itself. Start with the exact failing _jvm path in the traceback, then verify that the expected class is correctly named and available on the driver JVM’s classpath.
What the error means
Py4J represents Java packages and Java classes as different objects. Its API documentation describes JavaPackage as an internal representation of part of a Java package reached through a gateway; JavaClass is a separate representation. If Python tries to call a package object, the requested path has not resolved to the class or callable member the code expected. See the Py4J Java Gateway API documentation.
The exception is therefore a symptom of an unresolved JVM lookup or an incorrect call—not a diagnosis that automatically points to one missing library. The failing expression and runtime configuration determine what to investigate.
Trace the failed JVM lookup
- Find the first failing frame. Read the traceback from the top and locate the expression that accesses
_jvm. Record the full path after_jvmand the class or member you intended to call. - Check the fully qualified path. Compare the expression with the expected Java package and class name. A Spark ML issue documents an instance where accessing
MLSerDewithout its full classpath led to this exception. The relevant report is Apache Spark Jira SPARK-16348. - Identify which dependency provides the class. Determine whether the class belongs to core Spark, an optional Spark module, or a third-party connector. Do not assume that a class available in one Spark installation is included in every deployment.
- Verify the driver JVM classpath. Confirm that the required jar is available to the driver JVM process that owns the Spark gateway. A dependency present only in a different environment—or added after the JVM has started—may not be visible to that gateway. Check the classpath and configuration for your actual deployment.
- Compare runtime and integration versions. Check the deployed Spark, PySpark, JVM, Scala, and integration versions against the supported configuration for that environment. A Livy report involving Spark 3.5.4 is one example of a reported integration compatibility issue, not evidence that version mismatch explains every occurrence; see Apache Livy Jira LIVY-1010.
- Reproduce after a targeted correction. Retry the failing operation using the same Spark session, runtime, deployment mode, and dependency set. Treat the issue as resolved only after that specific environment succeeds.
Check for an optional Spark dependency
If the failing call is Spark SQL protobuf conversion, check the matching Spark protobuf dependency and its version. Spark’s PySpark protobuf implementation catches this exact TypeError and invokes a diagnostic for a missing Protobuf jar; this is direct evidence for that operation, not a general explanation for unrelated failures. For other operations, use the failing class path to identify the relevant module or connector. Adding an unrelated jar is unlikely to help, and dependency changes should be made through the deployment’s supported configuration rather than assumed to affect a JVM that is already running.
Why the call site and deployment mode matter
The same exception can appear in different contexts. Apache Spark Jira SPARK-51789 records it during SparkSession initialization in a Spark submission-mode issue; the Jira page notes resolution through PR 50575 in April 2025. That report illustrates why the first failing frame and runtime mode matter, but it does not establish that submission mode is the cause in other environments. See Apache Spark Jira SPARK-51789.

Information needed to identify a specific fix
Without the traceback, failing _jvm expression, Spark/PySpark/JVM/Scala versions, and deployment platform, it is not possible to name the missing class or prescribe a version change reliably. To narrow the problem, collect:

- The complete traceback and exact expression that failed.
- The fully qualified Java class or member the code intends to access.
- The Spark and PySpark versions, JVM and Scala versions, and deployment mode.
- The module or connector expected to provide the class, and whether its jar is on the driver JVM classpath.
- Any relevant integration’s supported runtime configuration.
