To change where Windows Snipping Tool saves screenshots automatically, open Snipping Tool, select See More (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings. Microsoft says this is where you can change its automatic-save behavior or default Screenshots folder. To choose a different location for just one capture, use Save as.
Change Snipping Tool’s default Screenshots folder
- Open Snipping Tool from Start, or press Windows logo key + Shift + S to start a capture.
- In the Snipping Tool app, select See More (the three-dot menu), then select Settings.
- On the Settings page, adjust the automatic-save behavior or default Screenshots folder. Microsoft identifies this page as the control for those options; the exact choices may vary with Snipping Tool updates. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions
Save one screenshot to a different location
If you only need to put a particular capture somewhere else, open it in Snipping Tool and select Save as. Choose the folder and filename for that image. This changes the destination for that save, not the app’s default folder. Microsoft Support
Where Windows saves screenshots from other capture methods
The Snipping Tool folder setting is specifically documented for captures made with Snipping Tool. It should not be assumed to redirect screenshots taken by every other app or method. Microsoft’s Print Screen guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 says screenshots taken with Windows logo key + PrtScn are saved under Pictures > Screenshots in File Explorer. Keep OneDrive backup separate from the save location
Changing Snipping Tool’s default folder and backing up Pictures to OneDrive are different settings. Microsoft says the dedicated Save screenshots to OneDrive option is no longer available. When saving files, OneDrive also provides a choice between OneDrive and This PC; its folder-backup settings control default save behavior for backed-up folders.
