HPE VM Essentials (VME) is best understood as a way to manage existing VMware virtual machines alongside HPE’s own KVM-based hypervisor—not as a proven, feature-for-feature VMware replacement. HPE introduced it at Discover Barcelona in November 2024, and later described a standalone version sold through its channel partners. Whether it can replace VMware for a particular workload depends on that workload’s feature, integration, hardware and support requirements.

Why HPE says VM Essentials is not a direct VMware competitor

At launch, HPE executives discussed customers’ concerns about virtualization costs but did not position VME as a direct competitor to Broadcom, VMware’s owner. HPE’s stated pitch was a unified management experience for existing VMware workloads and the new HPE hypervisor. CEO Antonio Neri described it as a way to “manage existing VMware workloads or the new HP VM Essentials hypervisor with a simplified experience across both stacks,” as quoted in IT Pro’s November 22, 2024 launch report.

That distinction matters: managing VMware and HPE-hosted VMs through one experience is not the same as converting VMware VMs to HPE’s hypervisor, nor does it establish that the products have equivalent features. IT Pro reported that HPE acknowledged VME did not have all the features VMware offered. HPE executive Ulrich Seibold said, “VM Essentials we do not position as a competitive tool or software to Broadcom.”

Neri also said, as reported by IT Pro, that VMware’s changed pricing strategy had caused some customers’ costs to rise by 300%–500%. That is an attributed HPE claim about some customers, not an independently verified statistic or a typical increase that can be applied to every VMware customer.

What VM Essentials does

In its February 25, 2025 announcement, HPE described VME as a standalone solution for managing VMs on VMware hypervisors already in place and on HPE’s own KVM-based hypervisor. HPE presented that scope as a way to operate across both environments and described an upgrade path to Morpheus cloud management. The announcement named HPE ProLiant Compute Gen11 and Gen12 support; it is not a complete or necessarily current compatibility matrix. See HPE’s global availability announcement.

HPE’s QuickSpecs list capabilities including VM live migration, native IP pools and snapshot-based data protection for VME and VMware VMs. Those are vendor-listed features, not independent evidence of performance or feature parity with VMware. The specific functions and entitlements available to a customer should be checked against the applicable release and license.

When it may be a fit—and when it may not

Potentially suitable cases

  • You want to manage an existing VMware environment alongside a smaller or new HPE KVM environment while assessing a staged transition.
  • The workloads under consideration do not depend on VMware-specific features or integrations that VME does not provide.
  • Your organization can validate the needed management, migration, backup, availability and operational functions before moving production workloads.

Reasons to keep VMware or investigate further

  • A workload depends on a VMware feature, integration or operating procedure that has not been confirmed in VME.
  • You need a demonstrated migration procedure, downtime estimate or rollback plan. The fact that VME can manage VMware VMs does not itself establish that a VM has been converted or migrated.
  • Your required server, storage, network or support configuration is not confirmed in HPE’s current compatibility documentation.

HPE COO for hybrid cloud Hang Tan argued at launch that the idea of streamlining IT by embracing a single ecosystem was “obsolete now,” as quoted by IT Pro. That describes HPE’s positioning; it does not establish that a mixed environment will be simpler for every organization. The relevant test is whether the operating model and supported feature set meet your requirements.

What to verify before planning a move

  1. Inventory workload dependencies. List the VMware features, integrations, automation, availability, backup and management functions each workload uses. Match those requirements against the current VME documentation rather than assuming parity.
  2. Separate management from migration. Confirm whether your plan is to manage VMware and HPE KVM side by side, or to move particular VMs to the HPE hypervisor. For each proposed move, get workload-specific procedures, downtime expectations and recovery steps from HPE or your implementation partner.
  3. Validate the exact hardware and configuration. HPE’s February 2025 announcement names ProLiant Compute Gen11 and Gen12, but does not establish every supported model or storage and networking combination. Check current documentation for the exact configuration and support status.
  4. Compare the actual licensing and support costs. HPE describes socket-based pricing. Compare a quote for your server configuration with the VMware costs and support terms it would replace, and confirm which features and services are included. Do not use the reported 300%–500% claim as a savings estimate.
  5. Run a controlled evaluation. Test representative workloads and operational tasks, including recovery and migration, before setting a production cutover. Confirm current license entitlements and release details with HPE.

How VM Essentials is sold

HPE describes standalone VME as a channel-sold, socket-priced product. Its product listing presents a per-socket, two-year renewal electronic license (SKU S8N57AAE) and directs buyers to request a custom quote or select an authorized reseller. The listing does not provide a generally applicable fixed price; actual quotes may depend on region and configuration.

Bottom line for VMware customers

HPE VM Essentials is a credible option to evaluate for selected workloads or a phased, mixed VMware-and-HPE KVM environment. The evidence does not support treating it as a universal VMware substitute: HPE acknowledged feature gaps at launch, and suitability, compatibility, licensing and migration requirements must be checked for the specific environment.
