The best computer mouse depends on what you do with it and how it fits your hand. For everyday work, the Logitech MX Master 4 is a strong productivity pick in recommendations from RTINGS and Tom’s Guide—but its right-handed shape, 125Hz polling rate, and reliance on Logitech software make it a poor universal choice. For gaming, prioritize shape, weight, latency, and the games you play instead of choosing by DPI alone.

Which computer mouse is best for most everyday work?

The Logitech MX Master 4 is the clearest all-around productivity recommendation in the cited coverage: RTINGS names it best for most people, with caveats, and Tom’s Guide names it best overall. Those are their recommendations, not hands-on test results from iTechGuides.

Its design is built around office and desktop work. The ergonomic shape is for right-handed users; the main scroll wheel offers notched and free-spin modes, while a second wheel handles horizontal scrolling. Gesture controls and the customizable Actions Ring add ways to access shortcuts. Logitech’s Logi Options+ software supports app integrations.

Logitech says its Ergo Lab study involved 37 users performing eight desktop actions. The company reports that users could save up to 33% of their time and reduce mouse movements by up to 63%, depending on the shortcuts assigned. These are manufacturer-reported, conditional results—not a general or independently verified guarantee of productivity gains.

Where the MX Master 4 is a good fit

  • You want a right-handed ergonomic mouse for productivity and general desktop use.
  • You regularly scroll through long documents or wide spreadsheets and can use the separate horizontal wheel.
  • You value configurable shortcuts and can install and run Logitech software on your computer.

Where it falls short

  • RTINGS reports a 125Hz polling rate and says cursor movement can feel less smooth on high-refresh displays. Its review does not recommend the mouse for competitive FPS gaming, citing its weight, sensor performance, and latency.
  • Some advanced functions require Logi Options+ to run in the background. The review also says the mouse lacks onboard memory for settings, which can matter on locked-down work computers.
  • The right-handed shape is not a universal fit. Comfort depends on hand size, grip, and personal preference; if possible, try the shape before committing to it for a full workday.

Logitech MX Master 4 Right-handed productivity and everyday desktop work Ergonomic shape, dual scroll wheels, gesture control, haptic feedback, and customizable Actions Ring 125Hz polling; not recommended by RTINGS for competitive FPS. What should you look for in a computer mouse?

Start with the job

For office work, consider comfort over long sessions, scrolling, buttons, and shortcuts. For travel, size and portability matter. For MMO or MOBA play, the number and placement of controls may be more important than an ultralight design. For competitive FPS, weight, shape, sensor behavior, and latency deserve particular attention.

Check fit before headline specifications

Consider whether the mouse is designed for your dominant hand, whether its shape suits your hand size, and whether it works with your grip. A mouse can have impressive specifications yet be uncomfortable or hard to control for you. Weight is also a preference: a lighter mouse can support rapid movements, but it is not automatically the better choice for every user.

Put DPI and polling rate in context

DPI is only one part of mouse performance. For fast competitive play, sensor behavior and latency matter too; polling rate can also affect how smooth cursor movement feels, particularly on a high-refresh display. Higher polling can increase power consumption, so consider battery life alongside performance when choosing a wireless gaming mouse.

Check controls, software, and compatibility

Count the controls you will actually use. A horizontal scroll wheel, free-spin mode, extra buttons, or configurable shortcuts can be useful for particular workflows, but they add little if they do not suit your tasks. Check the supported operating systems, included receiver, wireless connection options, and whether your workplace permits the required configuration software.

Which MX Master 4 version and setup should you check?

There are standard and Mac variants. RTINGS says the Mac variant works with Windows and macOS but does not include the Logi Bolt USB-C receiver; it remains compatible with one. That receiver detail makes it worth checking the exact regional SKU and the contents of the listing rather than assuming every version ships with the same accessories. Confirm device compatibility and software requirements for your setup before buying.

Is the MX Master 4 a good gaming mouse?

It is not the right choice for competitive FPS according to RTINGS: the review reports a 125Hz polling rate and cites weight, sensor performance, and latency as reasons it is unsuitable for that use. A high-refresh display can also make its cursor movement feel less smooth. For a mouse intended to serve both work and gaming, RTINGS’ comparison with the Keychron M6 8K points to a trade-off: the Keychron is described as lighter and better on gaming latency and polling, while the MX Master 4 emphasizes build quality and productivity controls.

For gaming-specific options, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide discusses the Razer Viper V4 Pro, SteelSeries Rival Pro, Logitech G Pro X Superlight 2, and Cherry XTRFY M50 Wireless. Those are recommendations from that guide, not findings from iTechGuides testing. Narrow the choice by the games you play, grip and hand fit, weight, performance needs, battery life, and budget; verify the current model and listing before choosing.

What is established about the testing behind these recommendations?

The recommendations above come from the cited publications’ coverage, not from a documented iTechGuides test program. Tom’s Guide describes testing mice across long work shifts and competitive gaming; its gaming guide says it tests at least four games across genres, typically FPS, RTS, RPG, and MMO, and uses mice for productivity for at least two days when possible. RTINGS identifies Test Bench 1.5.2 for its MX Master 4 review and notes that a March 10, 2026 update changed its sensor-latency measurements. Those methods belong to those publications and should not be presented as iTechGuides’ own testing.
