Which display-driver update method should you use?

1. Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update. The exact wording can vary slightly by Windows release.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if Windows prompts you to do so.
Windows Update handles drivers for many device types. If it offers no relevant driver, continue to Device Manager rather than assuming your display driver is already current.
2. Identify your display adapter
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact name of each adapter listed.
Some computers—particularly laptops—list more than one display adapter, so check each entry. If you see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using its generic driver. Microsoft recommends installing a manufacturer-specific driver when one is available.
3. Search for the adapter driver automatically
- In Device Manager, right-click the display adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose the option to search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows installs a driver, follow any restart prompt.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed, this automatic search did not find an update. It does not establish that the PC or adapter maker has no newer package.

4. Install a driver from the official manufacturer
If Windows Update and automatic search do not find what you need, download a driver from the official website of your computer maker or display-adapter maker. For a laptop or prebuilt PC, start with the computer maker’s support page: its package may be selected for that specific system. A generic package from a GPU maker is not necessarily the right choice for every OEM configuration.
- Confirm your computer model and the exact display-adapter model.
- On the manufacturer’s official support or download page, select a driver that matches your device, Windows version, and system architecture.
- Download and, if necessary, extract the driver package.
- In Device Manager, right-click the adapter and choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- Browse to the folder containing the extracted driver, follow the prompts, and restart if requested.
Microsoft advises against downloading drivers from non-manufacturer websites. Do not assume that a driver update will improve performance, or that the newest package is always the best fit for your PC.

5. Recover if the update causes problems
Roll back the driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected display adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available, then follow the prompts.
Microsoft documents driver rollback as a troubleshooting step. The option may not be available for every adapter or update.
Reinstall the display driver
If rollback is unavailable, Microsoft’s documented alternative is to uninstall the display driver and reinstall it, then restart when prompted. For a blank screen or other severe display problem, use Microsoft’s screen troubleshooting guidance, which also covers recovery options such as Safe Mode.

Check compatibility before a Windows feature upgrade
Microsoft has documented a safeguard hold affecting certain NVIDIA display-driver versions that can block an upgrade to Windows 11 version 24H2 or later because those versions may cause loss of display after the OS upgrade. This applies only to affected devices and driver versions. If the notice applies to your device, Microsoft advises updating the NVIDIA driver first and waiting for Windows to offer the feature update automatically; do not use Update now or the Media Creation Tool before the new driver is installed and the upgrade is automatically offered. Check Microsoft’s current safeguard notice to confirm whether it still applies to your device.
