You can sometimes get Windows 11 setup past a hardware check with Microsoft’s registry workaround or the third-party Flyby11 Classic tool, but neither makes an unsupported PC supported. Microsoft warns that unsupported installations may have compatibility problems, are not guaranteed updates—including security updates—and are not eligible for Microsoft support. Check why your PC failed first, then weigh that risk before proceeding.

Can you install Windows 11 on an unsupported PC?

Sometimes, depending on which requirement the PC fails and which Windows release you are installing. The registry workaround Microsoft documents is limited to upgrade scenarios involving an unsupported processor or TPM 1.2. Flyby11 Classic uses a different setup path that its project says can bypass certain TPM, Secure Boot, and CPU checks. Neither method guarantees that every unsupported computer can install Windows 11, and neither changes the PC’s eligibility or support status.

Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “This PC doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 – these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren’t covered under the manufacturer warranty.” Microsoft Support explains the warning and its consequences.

Check why your PC is marked unsupported

Start with the specific failure rather than trying a bypass immediately. Microsoft recommends using PC Health Check to confirm whether a device meets Windows 11 requirements. A TPM or Secure Boot failure may also mean the feature is disabled in firmware rather than absent; check your PC maker’s firmware instructions before treating that setting as a hardware limitation.

  1. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check and review the reported reason the PC is not eligible.
  2. If the report identifies TPM or Secure Boot, consult your PC maker’s instructions to see whether the feature can be enabled in firmware.
  3. If the PC still fails a requirement, decide whether the risk of an unsupported installation is acceptable before using either workaround.

For supported devices, Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer the upgrade. Its Windows 11 download page also provides installation-media instructions for eligible devices; using installation media is not Microsoft approval of a bypass.

What does the registry workaround do?

Microsoft documents a registry-based workaround for certain upgrade cases involving an unsupported CPU or TPM 1.2. It is not a general switch for every Windows 11 requirement, and the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish it as a universal clean-install bypass. Do not assume it will solve missing Secure Boot, insufficient memory, or other hardware failures. The PC remains unsupported after the upgrade.

Because the method is narrowly scoped, first confirm that your case matches Microsoft’s documented CPU or TPM 1.2 scenario and follow the current instructions on Microsoft’s unsupported-device support page. Do not apply registry changes based on a guide for a different failure or installation type.

What is Flyby11, and does it still work?

Flyby11 Classic is a third-party project, not a Microsoft tool. Its documentation describes an in-place upgrade method that invokes a Windows Server variant of Setup to skip certain TPM, Secure Boot, and CPU checks while installing regular Windows 11. The project says this approach addresses restrictions introduced with Windows 11 version 24H2; it also states that the processor’s POPCNT requirement cannot be bypassed. That is the project’s description of its method, not a Microsoft endorsement or a guarantee for a given PC or release.

Rank #3

Flyby11 Classic is legacy software and is no longer actively maintained. The project identifies Flyoobe as its successor. If you choose to inspect or use the project, get it only from the official builtbybel/Flyby11 GitHub repository; the successor’s documentation warns that impersonating sites exist. Future Windows setup behavior and update eligibility on unsupported machines remain uncertain.

Registry workaround vs. Flyby11 Classic

Factor Microsoft registry workaround Flyby11 Classic
Installation path Upgrade workaround for the documented CPU or TPM 1.2 case. Project-described in-place upgrade using a Windows Server variant of Setup.
Checks addressed Unsupported CPU or TPM 1.2 in the scope of Microsoft’s guidance; not a universal bypass. Project says it skips certain TPM, Secure Boot, and CPU checks; POPCNT cannot be bypassed.
Fresh install Not established by the cited Microsoft guidance as a universal clean-install bypass. Documentation describes an in-place upgrade route, not a promise of support for every installation type.
Files and apps Upgrade guidance; retention depends on the upgrade path and setup choices. Described by the project as an in-place upgrade; confirm the setup choices and back up first.
Maintenance Microsoft guidance; check the current support page for applicable instructions. Classic is legacy and no longer actively maintained; Flyoobe is identified as its successor.
Support and updates Unsupported-device risks remain. Unsupported-device risks remain; the project does not guarantee future compatibility or updates.

Back up before installing

Before changing Windows installations, make a backup of files you cannot afford to lose. Microsoft warns that booting from installation media to perform a fresh install removes the existing Windows installation, files, and apps. An external backup drive is one option Microsoft names. A USB flash drive is used for installation media when that route applies; it is not a requirement for every in-place upgrade.

If you use installation media, read Microsoft’s instructions for your intended installation type and check the selected drive and partitions carefully. A fresh install is different from an in-place upgrade and can erase data even when the goal is only to get past a compatibility check. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation-media guide explains the official process for supported installations.

What happens after an unsupported install?

Microsoft says unsupported devices are not guaranteed updates, including security updates, and may show an unsupported-device watermark or a notification in Settings. A workaround cannot promise that later cumulative or feature updates will install, or that a future Windows release will continue to run on the same hardware.
