Check the shipment independently by opening UPS.com yourself or using the UPS app. UPS does send legitimate text notifications, so a message is not automatically a scam—but an embedded link is not the safe way to find out.
Is this UPS text a scam?
It may be, especially if it unexpectedly says a package is waiting or delayed and asks you to pay in advance, update an address or account, or provide personal information. UPS says scammers impersonate the company to seek information or payment, and fraudulent links can lead to fake websites or malware. The FTC has also warned about fake package texts designed to get people to click phishing links.
UPS’s U.S. tracking-support page says: “First of all, don’t click on any suspicious links.” The FTC gives similar advice: “If you get an unexpected text message about a package, don’t click on any links.” Even if a message has the UPS logo or includes convincing package details, those details do not prove it is genuine. A suspicious site can look legitimate.
How can I tell if a UPS text is real?
Use clues to decide whether to be cautious, not as permission to follow a link. The safest check is to open UPS.com yourself or use the UPS app and look up the shipment there.

Notice what the message asks you to do
An unexpected request to pay a small “redelivery” fee, correct an address, enter a password or card number, or provide other sensitive information is a reason to stop and verify independently. Don’t reply with information or use the payment link in the text.
Check the actual link destination
UPS says a legitimate UPS link starts with https://www.ups.com or https://billing.ups.com. A link that merely displays UPS branding or words such as “tracking” does not establish that its destination belongs to UPS. Don’t open a suspicious link to inspect it; go to the UPS site independently instead.

Treat the sender short code as a clue, not proof
UPS’s U.S. support page lists 75137 or 24031 as short codes used for its text messages. Because the page’s FAQ renderings are not fully consistent, don’t assume that one code is the only valid sender. A matching code does not make an unexpected request safe; verify the shipment separately.
Check the package story outside the text
Open UPS.com yourself and enter the tracking number, or contact UPS using details found on its official site. Don’t rely on a tracking number or package story supplied only in the message until you have checked it independently. Typos and pressure tactics can be warning signs, but polished writing or accurate-looking details are not proof of authenticity.

I got a text saying my UPS package is delayed. What should I do?
- Don’t interact with the message. Don’t reply, tap a link, call a number in the text, or open an attachment.
- Check tracking separately. Open UPS.com yourself or use the UPS app, then look up the package. If the message claims a fee is due, use the payment option reached from the official tracking page. If it claims a bill is due, log in to the UPS Billing Center directly and use its “pay now” option.
- Ask UPS through an independent channel if you’re still unsure. Find its contact details on the official UPS site, not in the message.
- Report the text. Forward it to 7726 (SPAM), use your messaging app’s report-junk or spam option, and report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Delete and block it if appropriate. Phone settings and some wireless providers may offer filtering or blocking tools, but availability varies.
UPS says I need to pay a redelivery fee. Do I click the link?
No. Don’t pay through the suspicious message or use its link. If a package payment is genuinely due, UPS directs customers to track the package on its official site and select “pay now.” If the message concerns a bill, sign in to the UPS Billing Center directly and use “pay now.” If tracking does not confirm a payment is due, contact UPS using independently found contact details.

Take steps based on what you entered. Clicking a link does not mean a phone was definitely infected, but the FTC warns that a link can lead to a page that steals information or could download malware. The exact risk depends on what happened after you opened it.

- If you entered a password: Change it through the real service’s website or app. Change it on any other account where you reused that password.
- If you entered card or bank details: Contact the card issuer or bank using the official number on your card or statement. Explain what you submitted and follow its guidance.
- If you entered other sensitive information: Monitor the relevant accounts for unauthorized activity and report anything you find to the organization involved.
- If you interacted with a suspicious URL: The U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s general smishing guidance advises notifying your financial institution. That guidance concerns smishing generally, not a UPS-specific procedure.
Report the text to the FTC and your messaging app even if you already clicked. No single step can guarantee that information has been recovered or that an account is secure, so keep monitoring any accounts affected by what you shared.
