If Ethernet is slow or unstable in Windows 11, first check whether Windows sees a connection, then test the cable and router port. Compare another device or cable before changing adapter or TCP settings: the bottleneck may be the PC, local network, or internet service, and no setting can be assumed to increase speed without identifying the cause.
How do I optimize Ethernet on Windows 11?
Use this sequence from lowest risk to highest. It separates a physical connection problem from a PC, router, or internet-service issue before you make changes that may disrupt networking.
- Check Windows connection status. Open Settings > Network & internet and inspect Ethernet. Microsoft says the connection should show as connected; if you see “Action needed,” open it to inspect Ethernet settings. For Ethernet trouble, Microsoft recommends starting the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app. See Microsoft’s Ethernet connection troubleshooting guide.
- Check the cable and router port. Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both ends and goes into a router LAN Ethernet port, not the internet/modem port. Microsoft’s instruction is: “Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into the Ethernet port on both your router and Windows PC.” Try another cable if available; if the replacement works, the original cable may be faulty.
- Compare devices and connections. Test another device on the same network, or compare the PC’s wired connection with another available connection. If multiple devices have trouble, investigate the cable, router, or ISP before changing Windows settings. If only this PC has trouble, focus on its Ethernet port, adapter, driver, or configuration. These comparisons narrow the search; they do not by themselves prove which component is at fault.
- Only then inspect adapter settings. Advanced properties depend on the network adapter and driver. Do not apply generic buffer, speed/duplex, or power values. Check the NIC manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and driver before changing a property.
- Reserve network reset for a persistent problem. It removes installed network adapters and their settings; after restart, Windows reinstalls the adapters with defaults. VPN clients, Hyper-V virtual switches, and other network virtualization software may need to be reinstalled or configured again.
Why is my Ethernet slower than expected?
Ethernet speed is limited by the slowest relevant part of the path. A damaged or unreliable cable, an unsuitable router port, the PC’s adapter or driver, the router, or the ISP may be responsible. A Windows tuning change is not a substitute for locating that bottleneck.
- One PC is affected: check its cable connection and adapter or driver, then compare with another device on the same router.
- Several devices are affected: investigate the shared cable or router path and whether the ISP connection is the issue.
- Wired is poor but another connection works: prioritize the Ethernet cable, router port, and PC adapter path.
These are diagnostic clues rather than guarantees. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance also identifies the cable, router, ISP, and USB-to-Ethernet adapter as possible causes when devices cannot connect.

When should you change Ethernet adapter settings?
Only change an adapter property when you know what the setting does, that the adapter and driver support it, and the vendor’s guidance applies to your hardware. Available options vary. Microsoft documents that some adapters expose receive and send buffer values, and provides PowerShell cmdlets for inspecting or modifying adapter properties; that documentation is not a universal recommended configuration. See Microsoft’s network adapter selection guidance.
Changes to advanced properties can interrupt or lose connectivity. Microsoft’s server-focused network performance troubleshooting guidance discusses Receive Side Scaling (RSS) and Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) for a specific low-latency, high-bandwidth server scenario. In that context, misconfigured or disabled RSS or VMQ can limit throughput and concentrate CPU work; Microsoft advises VMQ for a physical hypervisor host and RSS when the machine is not a hypervisor. This is specialized server guidance, not evidence that enabling RSS or changing a property will improve a typical Windows 11 home PC.

- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Should you change TCP settings to improve Ethernet speed?
Not as a general speed fix. Microsoft’s TCP examples address a high-latency, high-bandwidth server scenario. In that case, Microsoft notes that the TCP Window Scale option was not enabled and shows normal receive-window autotuning commands. The article describes five autotuning levels: Disabled, Highly Restricted, Restricted, Normal, and Experimental. It does not support disabling autotuning as a routine fix for browsing, gaming, or downloads.
The Microsoft netsh interface reference explains how to inspect global TCP parameters and supplemental templates, including internet, datacenter, automatic, custom, and compatibility. It documents available controls, not a guaranteed improvement from changing them. Avoid global TCP changes unless a measured, relevant workload and appropriate technical guidance justify them.

How do I fix an unstable Ethernet connection?
Start with the physical path and the automated troubleshooter, then use device comparisons to narrow the cause. If the connection repeatedly drops after a setting change, restore the previous value if possible and consult the adapter manufacturer’s instructions. If basic checks do not resolve persistent trouble, consider network reset only after accounting for software that depends on custom adapters or virtual switches.
Does metered Ethernet make a connection faster?
No. A metered connection is a data-use control, not a speed, latency, or stability optimization. Microsoft says Windows may not install some updates automatically, Store downloads may pause, and offline files may not sync automatically on a metered connection. See Microsoft’s metered connections explanation.

When should you replace a cable or add an Ethernet adapter?
Test an available known-good cable before buying one. Replacing a cable is reasonable when the existing one appears damaged or unreliable, but a higher-category cable is not automatically a speed upgrade for an otherwise healthy internet connection. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is relevant if the PC lacks an Ethernet port or its existing adapter has been identified as faulty—not as a general-purpose speed booster.
