There is no single Num Lock position or shortcut for every Dell laptop. Look for a key labeled Num Lock or Num Lk, including a smaller secondary legend, and check your model’s Dell manual if it is not obvious. Depending on the keyboard layout, Num Lock may activate number-entry keys built into the keyboard rather than a separate keypad.
Where to look for Num Lock
Dell laptop keyboards vary by model. Some have an integrated numeric keypad, some have a dedicated numeric keypad, and others use dual-purpose keys for number entry. The Num Lock key or function may therefore be in a different place—or may appear as a secondary legend on another key. Dell advises consulting the documentation for the specific product to identify its layout.
Scan the key legends for “Num Lock” or “Num Lk.” If the label is printed smaller alongside another symbol, it indicates a secondary function. For the exact key position on your laptop, find its model-specific documentation through Dell’s keyboard usage and troubleshooting guide.
How to turn Num Lock on or off
- Find the Num Lock or Num Lk legend on your keyboard, or identify the designated key in your Dell model’s manual.
- Press that key. On layouts that use an integrated keypad, Num Lock toggles the number-entry function; Dell’s instructions say the Num Lock light indicates when the keypad is active.
- If the key does not respond, check its legend and your model’s manual to see whether you must hold Fn while pressing it. Dell notes that some laptop Num Lock functions may require Fn, but does not specify one combination that applies to all Dell laptops.
Dell’s instructions for an integrated keypad also describe holding Fn while pressing designated keys to enter numbers or symbols. The precise keys depend on the keyboard layout. See Dell’s instructions for using a numeric keypad on a laptop for the XPS 13 9310 example.

Why letters may type numbers
On some layouts, certain letter keys double as a simulated numeric keypad. When Num Lock is active, those keys enter numbers instead of their usual letters. Press Num Lock again to switch that keypad function off. The behavior depends on whether your particular Dell keyboard has this integrated arrangement.
Num Lock is not Fn Lock
Num Lock controls number-entry functions on supported keyboard layouts. Fn Lock concerns how the top-row function keys behave. For example, the 2021 Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged manual describes Fn Lock for top-row keys; that is not evidence of a Num Lock shortcut for other Dell laptops.

If you cannot find a Num Lock key
- Check for a smaller “Num Lk” or “Num Lock” legend on a dual-function key.
- Use the exact model name or number to open its Dell manual and confirm the keyboard layout and key instructions.
- Do not assume a particular Fn-plus-key combination from instructions for a different Dell model.
- If your laptop lacks a dedicated numeric keypad and you regularly enter numbers, a USB numeric keypad is an optional accessory; it is not required to use an existing integrated keypad.
