Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your Android phone’s microphone isn’t working, first check whether the problem happens in just one app or in several. Then check that app’s microphone permission, Android’s microphone access control, and any connected Bluetooth or external audio device. If it still fails across apps after those checks, use your phone maker’s model-specific support to investigate further.
1. Check whether one app or several are affected
Try recording a short clip or speaking in a second app you already use. Note whether the microphone fails only in one app or across multiple apps. This simple comparison helps narrow down whether to focus on that app’s settings or on phone-wide controls; it does not by itself diagnose a hardware fault.
2. Check app permission and Android microphone access
Allow microphone access for the affected app
On many Android phones, open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions > Microphone and allow access if it is denied. Google describes this permission as “Record audio.” Menu names and locations can vary by device. Google’s Android app-permission instructions explain the permission and note that some details vary by phone.
Check the device-wide microphone control
On supported Android versions, microphone access can also be turned off for the device. Swipe down to open Quick Settings and check the microphone tile; if it is missing, you may need to add it. The gesture and tile availability vary by device. On Android 12 and later, a green indicator at the top right can show when an app or service is using the microphone. Tap the indicator to see what is using it and manage access. See Google’s guidance on microphone and camera access.

3. Check mute, audio input, and connected devices
For a call or meeting, make sure you are not muted and check which microphone the app or phone is using. If a Bluetooth headset or another audio device is connected, the phone may be routing audio through it rather than the built-in microphone. Disconnect and reconnect the device, or select the intended input in the app if that option is available.
Google Meet’s Android troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking Meet’s microphone permission, mute state, selected microphone, Bluetooth connection, and external audio devices. Other apps may have different controls; follow the affected app’s own instructions. Google Meet microphone troubleshooting.

4. Use safe mode to check for downloaded-app interference
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps, which can help test whether one is interfering with microphone use. The way to enter safe mode differs by phone, so use your manufacturer’s instructions rather than a button sequence intended for another model.
- Find the safe-mode instructions for your specific phone model from its manufacturer.
- Enter safe mode and test the microphone in an app available in that mode.
- If the problem goes away, restart normally, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, and retest after each removal.
If the microphone still fails in safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to explain the symptom. Google’s safe-mode guidance explains the diagnostic and removal approach.

Google likewise notes that settings vary by phone and directs users to the device manufacturer for more information: Android troubleshooting guidance.

Can an external microphone help?
A compatible external microphone may be a workaround for recording or meeting tasks if the app can select it as its input. Check that the microphone connects to your phone and is supported by the app. This can route audio around the built-in microphone for those tasks, but it does not repair a faulty built-in microphone. Google Meet’s guidance covers selecting an external microphone and audio device: Meet microphone troubleshooting.
