To create a hotspot, turn on hotspot sharing on your phone, then select the phone’s network name in the other device’s Wi-Fi settings and enter the password. Most phone hotspots share cellular data, so you need mobile service and a plan that supports tethering. The steps below cover iPhone, Android, and common connection problems.
Before you turn on your phone’s hotspot
A mobile hotspot lets a laptop, tablet, or another phone use your phone’s internet connection. Wi-Fi is usually the simplest way to connect. Bluetooth and USB tethering are also available on many phones, but compatibility depends on the devices and operating systems.
- Check your plan: Hotspot access or a separate allowance may be required. Carrier support, limits, and possible charges vary, particularly while roaming.
- Know what the connection uses: Most hotspots share mobile data. Connected devices may use data for software updates, streaming, cloud backups, and other background tasks.
- Expect battery use: Sharing a connection consumes phone battery. Turn the hotspot off when you are finished, and plug in when practical.
Settings labels can vary by phone model, carrier, and software version. If a path below does not match your screen, search Settings for “hotspot” or “tethering.”
Create a hotspot on iPhone
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot. If you have not set it up, go to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Personal Hotspot and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Turn on hotspot access when prompted. The Wi-Fi network name is your iPhone’s device name.
- To view or change the password, go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot > Wi-Fi Password.
- On the device you want to connect, open Wi-Fi settings, select your iPhone’s name, and enter the password. Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account can connect without manually entering it.
Apple’s documented setup recommends keeping devices within 30 feet (10 meters). If a device has trouble connecting, try enabling Maximize Compatibility in Personal Hotspot settings; Apple cautions that this may reduce performance.

You can also tether an iPhone to a Mac or Windows computer using Bluetooth or a compatible USB cable. For USB tethering on Windows, Apple says to install Apple Devices or iTunes. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer, approve the prompt and enter the iPhone passcode if requested.
Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular internet connection; it does not relay a Wi-Fi connection the iPhone is using. If Set Up Personal Hotspot is missing while Cellular Data is on, Apple advises contacting your carrier because the feature may not be available with your carrier or plan. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide.

Create a hotspot on Android
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Hotspot. If the tile is missing, tap Edit in Quick Settings and add it. You can usually touch and hold the tile to open hotspot settings.
- Turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot. In its settings, check the network name and password or set them as needed.
- On the receiving device, open Wi-Fi settings, select the phone’s hotspot name, enter the password, and connect.
On Pixel phones, the Wi-Fi hotspot settings are at Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Google says Data Saver must be off for Wi-Fi tethering on Pixel. Google documents up to 10 devices sharing a Pixel’s mobile data over Wi-Fi; this is a Pixel-specific documented limit, not a general limit for every Android phone. See Google Pixel Help.
Android also supports Bluetooth and USB tethering on most phones. For Bluetooth, pair the devices, set the receiving device to use Bluetooth networking, then turn on Bluetooth tethering in the phone’s hotspot settings. For USB, connect the phone to the other device and enable USB tethering in hotspot settings. Google says Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB. Google’s Pixel guidance also says Macs running macOS Monterey and later cannot tether with Android through Bluetooth. These are the compatibility limits in Google’s guidance, not a guarantee about every device or configuration. See Google Android Help on sharing a mobile connection and Google Pixel Help.

Samsung says 2.4 GHz is compatible with more devices, while 5 GHz offers better performance. If the hotspot is not visible, Samsung Philippines recommends trying 2.4 GHz and checking that the hidden-network option is off. See Samsung Philippines’ hotspot guidance.
Samsung’s Automatic Hotspot feature can share with devices signed in to the same Samsung account or family group, depending on settings. A timeout setting may switch the hotspot off when no device is connected. Samsung also notes that tethering may require an eligible plan and that hotspot use consumes mobile data and battery; roaming can result in extra charges.

Choose Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB tethering
| Method | When it fits | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi hotspot | Use when you want a wireless connection for a laptop, tablet, or another phone and can select a network name and enter a password. | Uses the phone’s mobile data on most devices. Keep access password-protected and check plan eligibility. |
| Bluetooth | An alternative wireless method when both devices support Bluetooth networking and are paired. | Setup differs by device. Google documents that Macs on macOS Monterey and later cannot tether with Android through Bluetooth. |
| USB | Use when connecting a phone directly to a computer with a compatible cable. | The cable must fit both devices. Google says Mac computers cannot tether with Android by USB. Apple requires Apple Devices or iTunes for iPhone USB hotspot use on Windows. |
The official setup guides establish these connection methods and the compatibility notes above; they do not establish a universal ranking for speed, reliability, privacy, or battery life.
Protect your hotspot and limit unwanted use
- Use a password and share it only with people and devices you intend to connect. Google documents an option to set security to “None,” which removes the password requirement; it is not needed for ordinary setup.
- Turn off hotspot sharing when you no longer need it. On Samsung, consider using the timeout option if available.
- Check your phone’s cellular usage and your plan’s hotspot allowance. The official setup guidance does not provide a typical data-use figure, and actual consumption depends on what connected devices do.
Troubleshoot a phone hotspot
The hotspot does not appear in the other device’s Wi-Fi list
- Confirm hotspot sharing is on and check the exact network name in the phone’s hotspot settings.
- Move the devices closer together and refresh the receiving device’s Wi-Fi list.
- On Samsung, try the 2.4 GHz band and make sure the network is not hidden.
- On iPhone, check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, keep the devices within the documented range, and try Maximize Compatibility if needed, bearing in mind Apple’s performance caveat.
- On Pixel, switch off Data Saver for Wi-Fi tethering.
The password is rejected or the connection will not complete
- Verify the password in the phone’s hotspot settings and re-enter it on the receiving device.
- If you changed the password, remove or forget the saved hotspot network on the receiving device, then select it again and enter the current password.
- For iPhone-to-computer USB connections, approve the trust prompt if it appears. On Windows, check that Apple Devices or iTunes is installed.
Hotspot settings are missing or activation fails
Check with your carrier. Hotspot availability and plan requirements vary, and Apple, Google, and Samsung all note that carrier support or plan eligibility may affect tethering.
