The PiBoy DMGx is a Game Boy-style handheld kit built around a Raspberry Pi, not a complete console you can play straight out of the box. Reports published in March 2024 describe a 3.5-inch color screen, physical controls, a cooling fan and a replaceable battery. You would also need to supply a compatible Raspberry Pi, prepare a microSD card with the PiBoy DMG RetroPie image and provide your own games. Its current sales and support status is unconfirmed.
What the PiBoy DMGx kit is—and what it is not
CNX Software described the DMGx on March 20, 2024 as a handheld kit for a Raspberry Pi 5. Buyers were expected to purchase and install the board themselves, prepare a microSD card with the PiBoy DMG image on RetroPie, and load any games they wanted to play. The kit therefore should not be treated as a ready-to-play console with a Raspberry Pi, software and games included.
The product was reported to support Raspberry Pi 3 and 4 with adapters as well as Raspberry Pi 5. That report does not establish that adapters remain available or that a particular board-and-adapter combination will work with a current software image. Check compatibility and included components before buying or building around an older Pi.
Reported hardware and connections
The following specifications are from CNX Software’s March 2024 product report, not an independent inspection or test. Tom’s Hardware’s March 18, 2024 report also described the screen, control layout and battery.

What you need to plan for
Raspberry Pi board
The Pi 5 is a separate purchase according to the 2024 kit report. Raspberry Pi’s official Raspberry Pi 5 product page lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor and memory configurations from 1 GB to 16 GB. Those are board specifications, not a PiBoy compatibility test or a promise of emulation performance.
Storage and software
The report says to prepare a microSD card with a PiBoy DMG image based on RetroPie. It does not establish a currently available image download, supported release, card-capacity requirement or complete installation procedure. Confirm that you can obtain the correct image and setup guidance before assembling the kit; do not assume any generic RetroPie image will support the handheld’s controls and display.

Power and cooling
The kit report lists a replaceable battery and built-in fan, but gives no measured battery runtime. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for the Pi 5 on its official product page. Do not assume the handheld battery or its charging arrangement is interchangeable with the board’s external power requirements without documentation for the specific kit.
Games and emulation expectations
You supply the games. Tom’s Hardware’s March 2024 assessment was that older systems are easier to emulate and results for later systems vary by game. That is a dated editorial characterization, not a measured frame-rate result or guarantee for a particular game, Pi configuration or software release. No reliable DMGx emulation success rate or independent benchmark is established by the cited reports.

Is the PiBoy DMGx available now?
Current authorized sales and support status are not established. CNX Software reported on March 20, 2024 that the product was not for sale at the time, while noting a $149.95 listing at the company store. That is historical context, not a current price or proof of present availability. A domain-sale result for experimentalpi.com crawled in 2026 likewise does not prove the company has closed or establish that another seller is authorized.
Before acting on any listing, verify that it is an authorized seller and check inventory, included parts, warranty, shipping region, adapter compatibility and access to the required software image. The sources do not establish a current authorized retailer or current support channel.

How the Raspberry Pi 5 fits into the decision
Raspberry Pi’s official product page says the Pi 5 supports Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and Bookworm, uses microSD storage, and includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and Gigabit Ethernet. It also states that the Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036. These details describe the board platform; they do not confirm PiBoy DMGx image compatibility, kit availability or how well specific games will run.
The practical distinction is that the Pi 5 is an actively supported single-board computer, while the DMGx is a separately sourced enclosure-and-controls kit whose present sales, software and support arrangements are unclear. Decide whether you can verify the kit and its image before purchasing a board specifically for this build.
