First decide whether you need Oracle MySQL 8.0 specifically. Amazon Web Services (AWS) documents MariaDB packages for Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023): they provide a MySQL-compatible client and server, but they are not Oracle MySQL 8.0. Oracle has a separate MySQL 8.0 repository route; the Oracle instructions reviewed do not explicitly certify AL2023, so verify compatibility before using it.
For a MySQL-compatible client or local server, AWS’s MariaDB route is the documented choice. For an Oracle MySQL 8.0 requirement, follow Oracle’s version-specific repository guidance only after checking that its packages work with your exact AL2023 image.
Choose the right installation route
| What you need | Package route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| MySQL-compatible command-line client | AWS documents mariadb105 |
Provides the mysql command, but it is the MariaDB client—not Oracle’s MySQL client. AWS client installation guide |
| MySQL-compatible local server | AWS documents mariadb105-server |
This installs MariaDB, a community-developed fork of MySQL, not Oracle MySQL 8.0. AWS AL2023 LAMP tutorial |
| Oracle MySQL 8.0 server and client | Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 Yum repository and mysql-community-server |
Oracle says the server package installs required components, including the client. The reviewed instructions do not explicitly list AL2023 as supported. Oracle MySQL 8.0 Yum guide |
If you only need to connect from AL2023 to a database running elsewhere, install a client rather than a server. A local server is appropriate when you intend to host and manage the database on this instance.
Check your AL2023 image before installing
Package availability changes across AL2023 releases and architectures. AWS examples use MariaDB 10.5 package names, while AL2023.12 release notes also list newer MariaDB package lines, including 10.11 and 10.6 series. Do not assume the example package is the newest one in your configured repositories; inspect what the target instance actually offers. AL2023 release notes
#1 Best Overall
cat /etc/os-release
dnf info mariadb105 mariadb105-server
dnf list --available 'mariadb*'
The first command identifies the operating-system release. The DNF queries show whether the AWS example packages are available and which MariaDB packages your configured repositories offer. Choose a package based on that output and your compatibility requirement.
Install the AWS-documented MariaDB client
For the client package shown in AWS’s AL2023 guide, run:
Rank #2
sudo dnf install mariadb105
mysql --version
The version check confirms that the mysql command is present and reports its client version. With this route, that command is supplied by MariaDB; seeing the name mysql does not mean Oracle MySQL is installed.
Install and start the AWS-documented MariaDB server
If MariaDB is sufficient for your application, install the server package and start its systemd service:

sudo systemctl start mariadb
sudo systemctl status mariadb
AWS documents mariadb105-server and the mariadb service name for its AL2023 example. If the package you selected from DNF belongs to a different MariaDB package line, check that package’s service and setup instructions rather than assuming every package detail is identical.
To start the service automatically after a reboot, AWS shows:
Rank #4
sudo systemctl enable mariadb
AWS also documents this interactive hardening utility for its MariaDB installation:
sudo mysql_secure_installation
Follow its prompts for the installed MariaDB version and your deployment’s needs. If the database should be reachable only on the same host, do not open its database port publicly. For remote clients, deliberately configure network access, host firewall and security-group rules, and database accounts and grants; installing the server alone does not safely expose it.

Use Oracle’s repository route only when MySQL 8.0 is required
Oracle’s version-specific Yum guide describes a distinct route for MySQL 8.0 Community Server. It uses the mysql80-community repository series and installs mysql-community-server; Oracle says this package includes the client components required to run the server. The general repository guide may default to a newer LTS series, so an 8.0 requirement calls for checking the version-specific instructions and confirming which series is enabled.
The important qualification is operating-system support: the reviewed Oracle documentation gives EL-family repository instructions, including an EL/9 path, but does not explicitly name Amazon Linux 2023 as a supported distribution. AWS advises, “Only add repositories designed to be used with AL2023,” and warns that repositories for other distributions may break with AL2023 updates. AWS guidance on repositories and updates Treat Oracle’s EL-family approach as requiring compatibility verification on your exact AL2023 release, not as an AWS-certified installation procedure.
- Check compatibility first. Identify the AL2023 release and architecture, then review Oracle’s current MySQL 8.0 Yum instructions and repository setup package for the platform. Do not copy an EL command without confirming it applies to the target image.
- Install and inspect the repository configuration. Obtain Oracle’s current repository setup RPM appropriate to the platform, install it, and inspect enabled repository entries. Confirm that
mysql80-communityis selected rather than a different series. - Review package behavior before installing. Check DNF’s proposed packages and dependencies, GPG key handling, and compatibility on the target release. Installing the repository can affect future system upgrades and may replace third-party packages when replacements exist.
- Install the server package. Once the repository and package behavior have been verified, use DNF to install
mysql-community-serveras Oracle’s guide directs. - Initialize and verify according to Oracle’s instructions. Use the service startup and root-password procedure for the exact installed MySQL 8.0 package. Then check
mysql --versionand connect to the server to query its version. Confirm that the installed server package and executable are Oracle MySQL Community Server, not MariaDB.
Keep updates and access under control
These routes have different maintenance responsibilities. AWS’s MariaDB packages come from AL2023’s configured package repositories; check package availability for the instance when installing or planning updates. Oracle’s MySQL repository adds an external source whose compatibility and effect on future upgrades you must assess. In either case, restrict network access to the database to the hosts and accounts that need it, and apply the setup and security instructions for the product actually installed.
