TLS 1.2 is enabled by default at the Windows operating-system level in Windows 11. If an app reports that it is disabled or cannot connect, a system-wide registry change is usually not the first fix: the app, its framework, or the connection endpoint may be responsible. Check the affected layer before changing Schannel settings.
Is TLS 1.2 enabled by default in Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft says TLS 1.2 is enabled by default at the operating-system level on Windows 8.1 and later, including Windows 11. That default describes Windows’ Schannel protocol support; it does not guarantee that every application uses TLS 1.2 for every connection. Applications and frameworks can control protocol behavior separately. See Microsoft’s guidance on enabling TLS 1.2 on clients and its TLS 1.2 support guidance.
Why might an app say TLS 1.2 is disabled?
TLS negotiation can involve more than the Windows setting. Identify which layer is failing before making a change:
| Layer | What to check | Scope of a likely fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Schannel | Whether policy or a registry override changed the protocol setting; whether the affected connection is acting as a client or server. | System-wide protocol policy for the relevant role. |
| Framework, such as .NET | Whether the framework version and configuration let the application use the operating system’s TLS defaults. | The framework or application configuration. |
| Application or endpoint | The app’s own TLS settings and whether the remote service supports the required protocol and connection. | The specific app, service, or connection. |
Microsoft describes the distinction between operating-system, framework, and application behavior in its client TLS guidance. A Windows-level setting alone cannot establish that a particular app will negotiate TLS 1.2.

Check the affected application before editing the registry
- Identify the failing program and connection. Note the app, the service or server it connects to, and the exact error. If only one app fails, focus first on its TLS configuration and framework rather than changing a global Windows setting.
- Determine the connection role. For Schannel, client and server protocol settings are separate. A computer connecting to a remote service uses the client role for that connection; software accepting connections uses the server role.
- Check applicable app or framework configuration. Confirm whether the software is configured to use the operating system’s TLS defaults or has an application-specific protocol setting. Microsoft’s documentation explains that framework and app behavior can differ from OS defaults.
- Consider endpoint compatibility. If Windows and the app are configured appropriately but negotiation still fails, the remote endpoint or another connection requirement may be involved. A TLS 1.2 registry value cannot make an unsupported endpoint use that protocol.
- Change Schannel policy only when evidence points to it. If an explicit Windows-level override is needed, use the correct role-specific TLS 1.2 subkey and follow your organization’s supported policy process.
How to explicitly enable TLS 1.2 in Schannel
Use this only as targeted troubleshooting or policy remediation—not as a routine security upgrade on every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft documents separate Schannel registry subkeys for Client and Server roles. The paths are under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProvidersSCHANNELProtocolsTLS 1.2:
- Client:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProvidersSCHANNELProtocolsTLS 1.2Client - Server:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProvidersSCHANNELProtocolsTLS 1.2Server
Microsoft’s guidance lists Enabled as a DWORD set to 1 and DisabledByDefault as a DWORD set to 0 for explicit TLS 1.2 enablement. Apply the values only to the role required by the affected connection. Microsoft’s Schannel registry settings reference documents protocol-specific subkeys and the Enabled override; its TLS 1.2 support article lists both values for Client and Server.

Registry edits carry risk: Microsoft warns that incorrect values can be stored without validation and may cause unrecoverable system errors. It recommends avoiding direct edits unless there is no alternative. Prefer Group Policy or other supported Windows administrative tools when they provide the needed control. See Microsoft’s TLS registry settings guidance.

TLS 1.2 enablement, disabling TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1, changing cipher-suite order, and forcing a particular application to negotiate TLS 1.2 are different actions. Do not change one setting on the assumption that it accomplishes the others. Microsoft says TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 began being disabled by default in Windows 11 Insider Preview releases in 2024; that scope does not establish identical defaults on every Windows 11 device. Consult Microsoft’s TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 deprecation guidance before changing older-protocol settings.
