HP menu names and steps vary by model, so use your printer’s exact model when following device-specific instructions.
1. Check the ink or toner
Check the printer’s supply levels. Replace an ink cartridge or toner cartridge if it is low or empty, but match the replacement to your precise printer model. HP’s cartridge guidance is model-specific; do not choose a cartridge based on the HP brand alone.
2. Print a test page from the printer
Use the printer’s information button or its on-device menu to print a test page, following the instructions for your model. This helps distinguish a printer-side fault from an issue with a particular document or computer setting.

3. Use the cleaning procedure for your printer type
Inkjet and LaserJet printers do not use the same cleaning workflow. Follow your model’s instructions; menu labels and available tools can differ.

For an inkjet printer
Run the built-in clean printhead or clean cartridges tool, typically found in the printer’s maintenance menu or the HP app. HP’s inkjet cleaning guidance calls for plain white paper. Inspect the resulting test page; if defects remain, you can run up to two more cleaning cycles. If defects remain after three cleanings, HP advises replacing the affected cartridge. Avoid unnecessary cleaning: it uses ink. For DeskJet, ENVY, and OfficeJet models, the print-quality diagnostic report can help show whether color blocks are missing or defective; use alignment when the report shows defective alignment lines.
For a LaserJet printer
Use the cleaning-page procedure specified for your exact LaserJet model. If that cleaning page is still blank, HP advises replacing the cartridge. Do not use an inkjet printhead-cleaning procedure on a LaserJet.

4. Check the print settings
If the printer’s own test page prints correctly, check the affected document’s settings in the application’s print dialog. Confirm that the selected color option, paper type, paper size, and print quality are appropriate. The precise path varies by application and by Windows or Mac version, so look in the print dialog rather than assuming one universal menu path.

If the printer still produces blank pages after the relevant supply, cleaning, and settings checks, check for a firmware update for your exact model and follow HP’s instructions to install it. If the issue continues, contact HP Support. Check the printer’s warranty and the applicable cartridge warranty before paying for service or replacing a printhead; whether a printhead is user-replaceable depends on the model.
