If Windows 11 seems to reset a connected display’s color profile, first check that you selected the correct monitor and that its intended profile is still set as the default. A screen that looks different after restart does not necessarily mean the profile was removed: HDR power behavior and Night light can change how colors appear. Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal cause or fix for a profile that repeatedly reverts.

First determine what changed

Open Settings > System > Display > Color profile and select the connected display from the selector near the top of the page. Then check which of these describes the problem:

  • The profile is missing from the list: Windows may no longer have that profile available for the selected display.
  • The profile is listed but is not the default: The profile is available, but a different one is selected for that display.
  • The intended profile is still the default, but the picture looks different: Check HDR, power state, and Night light before treating the symptom as a profile reset.

Windows’ profile controls apply to the selected display, so confirm the monitor before changing its settings. Microsoft’s color settings guidance explains the available profile controls.

Set the intended profile for the correct display

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
  2. Select the connected monitor you want to adjust.
  3. Look for the intended profile in the list. If it is present, select it and choose Set profile for that display.
  4. If the profile is absent, use the page’s add-profile option to add a profile appropriate to that exact display. Do not choose an arbitrary profile simply to fill the slot.

The page also offers profile removal and display calibration. Its automatic color management option is a separate system-level feature for supported displays and apps; it is not the same as choosing the display’s default profile.

Check HDR and power after a restart

If the monitor or laptop display supports HDR, open Settings > System > Display > HDR and check whether HDR is on. On HDR-capable laptops, Microsoft says the default power settings turn HDR off when the device is running on battery; colors may then look undersaturated after restarting. That change in appearance does not establish that Windows deleted the profile. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance.

HDR itself can also affect desktop color. Microsoft notes that some external HDR displays support a wider gamut than sRGB and may not reproduce sRGB desktop-app colors correctly while HDR is on. If the profile remains selected but the desktop looks wrong, compare the image with HDR on and off before changing profiles.

Check whether Night light is warming the image

Night light intentionally shifts colors warmer. To test whether it explains the change, open Settings > System > Display > Night light and select Turn off now, or reduce Strength. Microsoft also documents a red tint or apparent oversaturation when Night light is on for HDR-capable devices. If turning it off restores the expected look while the profile remains selected, the symptom is consistent with Night light or HDR appearance behavior rather than a changed default profile. Microsoft describes these settings in its brightness and color guidance and HDR guidance.

Use the calibration workflow that matches the display

Standard display calibration

The Color profile settings page offers Calibrate display for the selected display. Use a profile made for that display; calibration is not a general remedy for a profile-selection change that keeps returning.

External HDR display calibration

For an HDR monitor, use the Windows HDR Calibration app, not the built-in-display HDR video calibration feature. Microsoft lists Windows 11, an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, full-screen operation, and a supported display driver among the requirements; adjusting saturation requires a sufficiently recent supported GPU. Microsoft recommends running the app again when the display setup changes, such as after adding or replacing a display. The app-created profile can be removed through Color profile settings. This is HDR calibration, not a generic fix for ICC profile persistence.

HDR video calibration for a built-in screen

The separate Settings > System > Display > HDR > Display calibration for HDR video feature is for a built-in display and cannot calibrate an external monitor. For an external HDR display, Microsoft directs users to the HDR Calibration app. See its built-in display calibration instructions.

If the profile keeps reverting

Microsoft’s published guidance describes how to manage profiles and troubleshoot HDR appearance, but it does not establish a definitive cause or universal remedy for a connected display’s default profile repeatedly changing. Keep a short record across restarts to distinguish a selection change from an appearance change:

  • Which display is selected in Color profile settings.
  • The profile shown as default before and after restart, and whether it disappears or remains listed.
  • Whether HDR is on and whether the laptop is on battery or connected to power.
  • Whether Night light is enabled.
  • Whether the monitor was disconnected, reconnected, or rearranged.

These details can help narrow down the conditions around the behavior. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish a registry edit, a specific driver defect, or a monitor fault as the fix; avoid making those assumptions based on the color change alone. For background on Windows HDR behavior, see Microsoft’s overview of HDR in Windows.
