If Snapchat is filling up with unfamiliar or explicit friend requests, don’t accept them. Block suspicious accounts and report the account or any abusive message or content in Snapchat. The company recommends accepting requests only from people you know in real life; its controls can address specific accounts, but there is no evidence that they prevent every unwanted request.
What to do when a suspicious request arrives
- Don’t accept it. Snapchat recommends friending or accepting requests only from people you know in real life.
- Block the account if you don’t want it to contact you or make you uncomfortable.
- Report it if the account appears suspicious or sends abusive, sexual, or otherwise concerning content.
These actions address the account or content you encounter. They do not establish why you received a wave of requests, and an unfamiliar or explicit account is not automatically proven to be an automated bot.

How to report a Snapchat account or message
Report an account
- Open Snapchat’s Chat screen.
- Press and hold the account name.
- Tap Manage Friendship, then Report, and follow the prompts.
Snapchat’s safety guidance documents this account-report path and recommends reporting accounts that raise safety concerns. Snapchat’s instructions for reporting abuse or illegal content also cover reporting individual Chat messages, Snaps, and Stories: report the specific item when the content itself is the problem.
Block an account
Use Snapchat’s block option when you want to stop contact from a particular account. Blocking and reporting serve different purposes: blocking addresses contact from that account, while a report sends an account or content for review. Snapchat explains both options in its safety and reporting guidance.

What happens after a report
Snap reviews reports under its policies, but a report does not guarantee that the account or content will be removed. Snapchat says content found not to violate its policies may remain available.
What Snap’s enforcement numbers do—and don’t—show
Snap publishes platform-wide safety reporting, including enforcement figures. Those figures describe reports and actions across Snapchat; they are not counts of people receiving unsolicited friend requests, nor do they measure the likelihood that a particular request will be stopped.
| Reporting period and source | Published metric | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| January 1–June 30, 2025; Snap Inc., 2025 | 19,766,324 in-app reports; 6,278,446 enforcement actions; 4,104,624 unique accounts enforced; median response time of about two minutes | Platform-wide in-app reports and enforcement actions. The median is not a response-time guarantee for an individual report. Snap’s H1 2025 transparency report |
| July 1–December 31, 2025; Snap Inc., 2026 | 347,196 spam enforcements against 244,507 unique accounts; one-minute median from detection to final action | Spam-related enforcement and unique accounts enforced—not the number of spam friend requests or affected users. The median is not a promise about an individual request. Snap’s H2 2025 transparency report |
In an October 1, 2024 statement, Snap said it uses technology to detect and block certain activity and prohibits friending from suspicious accounts. That describes the company’s stated approach; it does not show that all suspicious requests are prevented.

A public post asks, “anyone else get constant friend requests from bots?” That wording reflects an individual’s experience, not representative evidence that the problem is widespread. The available platform figures do not establish how often users receive unsolicited requests, why a particular account is getting them, or whether every apparent bot account is automated.
Likewise, the cited information does not establish that changing privacy settings will stop every unwanted request. Use Snapchat’s in-app reporting and blocking tools for the accounts or content you encounter, without assuming a setting can eliminate the problem entirely.
When the concern involves minors
In coverage of an investigation, the European Commission reportedly expressed concern that Snapchat may not be doing enough to protect minors from users with harmful intent. This is a reported regulatory concern, not a final ruling. For an immediate unwanted contact, use the app’s reporting and blocking tools; report specific abusive content as well as the account when appropriate.
