Add the child’s details, choose which eligible books to share, review the profile settings, and protect adult controls with a parental-controls PIN. The steps apply to compatible Kindle e-readers; Amazon says Kindle Scribe does not currently support child profiles.
Before you begin
- A compatible Kindle e-reader, an Amazon account and its password, and the name and password for your Wi-Fi network.
- Access to Amazon Kids in your marketplace. Amazon says the feature is available only in select marketplaces; availability and device support can vary.
- A parental-controls PIN to protect settings. Keep it somewhere safe: Amazon says recovering a forgotten PIN may require deregistering and reregistering the Kindle.
Amazon’s 2026 Kindle setup instructions cover choosing a language, connecting to Wi-Fi, registering the device to an Amazon account, and setting up child profiles and a parental-controls PIN. Some Kindle models also offer phone-assisted Simple Setup through the Kindle app, which may use saved account and Wi-Fi details. Screens and menu labels differ by model and software version, so follow the prompts shown on your device.
On some Kids editions, setup may also prompt you to activate an included Amazon Kids+ offer. That is separate from creating a child profile.
Connect and register the Kindle
- Turn on the Kindle and choose a language when prompted.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Register the Kindle to the Amazon account you want to use for the family library. If you are using Simple Setup, follow the Kindle app prompts instead.
- Continue through the on-screen setup. If the device offers Kids+ activation, review it separately from the child-profile setup.
Create a child profile on the Kindle
- From the Kindle Home screen, open Menu.
- Select Parental Controls, then Amazon Kids.
- Choose Add New Profile or Add Kid Profile. You may be asked for the parental-controls PIN.
- Enter the child’s name and birthday.
- Choose any eligible content from the parent library that you want to share with the child.
- Review the profile and reading settings, then select Done.
If Amazon Kids is missing from Parental Controls, check your exact Kindle model and marketplace. Amazon’s help says Kindle Scribe cannot create child profiles at this time. Its general compatibility guidance does not provide a complete list of older Kindle models, so consult support for the specific model if the option is absent.

Choose books and manage settings
You can manage a child profile on the Kindle or, where available, through Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard on the web or in the mobile app. In the dashboard, select the child profile and open Content to choose eligible Amazon or subscription content and turn items on or off. The settings available depend on the device and marketplace.
What you can manage
- Eligible books and other supported content shared with the child.
- Age and language filters, where available.
- Device access, time limits, and educational goals, where available.
- Browsing and store controls, plus activity information, where available.
Content limits to know
Amazon says personal documents, music, Prime Video rentals, and videos included with Prime cannot be added through the child-profile content flow. Public-library books may be shareable in supported configurations; a borrowed book disappears from the child’s library when the lending period ends or the book is returned. Web restrictions do not necessarily block every site embedded inside other content, so check the details of the content the child can access.

Amazon Kids is not the same as Amazon Kids+
Amazon Kids is the profile and parental-controls experience. Amazon says parents can create a child profile at no additional cost on a compatible device, share eligible library content, apply age-appropriate filters, and review activity in Parent Dashboard. Amazon Kids+ is an optional paid subscription for premium children’s content. You do not need Kids+ just to create a child profile; if setup offers a trial or subscription, check its terms and renewal details before activating it.
Choosing a Kindle for a child
You may be able to use a compatible Kindle you already own; setting up a child profile does not require buying a new device. If you are checking a Kindle or considering a Kids edition, confirm these points before relying on a particular feature or offer:

If setup does not work
- Recheck the Amazon account email or phone number and password. If needed, use Amazon’s account-password reset help.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi password and that the Kindle is connecting to the intended network.
- If registration or connection still fails, follow Amazon’s model-specific Kindle registration or Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
- If the profile option is absent, verify model and marketplace compatibility rather than assuming every Kindle has the same menus.
Amazon’s setup guidance does not identify one universal cause or fix for registration problems, so use the instructions for your device when the basic checks do not resolve the issue.

Use Amazon Kids on the Kindle or Parent Dashboard where available to adjust the child’s content and settings. Amazon says inactive child profiles are removed automatically after more than 18 months. Keep that in mind if a profile is no longer in regular use.
