To install SQL Server 2019 for Configuration Manager, first confirm your site type, SQL Server build, host, collation, and account permissions. For Configuration Manager current branch, Microsoft documents SQL Server 2019 CU5 or later. Run SQL Server setup from its installation media, then configure the instance and database for Configuration Manager’s requirements before running site prerequisite checks and setup.
Choose the right SQL Server arrangement
Start by identifying whether you are installing SQL for a central administration site (CAS), primary site, or secondary site. The site role determines the required SQL Server edition and where the database server can run.
| Configuration Manager site | SQL Server option | Database server location |
|---|---|---|
| CAS | Full SQL Server installation | Local or remote |
| Primary site | Full SQL Server installation | Local or remote |
| Secondary site | SQL Server Express can be used | Must be on the secondary site server |
For Configuration Manager current branch, Microsoft lists SQL Server 2019 CU5 or later as supported for CAS, primary, and secondary sites. Confirm the applicable requirements for your Configuration Manager release before proceeding: Microsoft’s supported SQL Server versions.
Check the SQL Server host and build
SQL Server 2019 requires an x64 processor. Microsoft lists Windows Server 2016 or later and Windows 10 TH1 1507 or later among supported operating systems. The following are SQL Server installation baselines, not sizing recommendations for a production Configuration Manager workload:
#1 Best Overall
- Available disk space: at least 6 GB.
- Memory minimum: 1 GB for non-Express editions and 512 MB for Express.
- Memory recommendation: at least 4 GB for non-Express editions and 1 GB for Express.

Prepare permissions and Configuration Manager prerequisites
Before installing SQL Server, plan which account will install the Configuration Manager site and ensure it has the required access. The site installation account needs administrative rights on both the site server and database server, plus the SQL Server sysadmin role on the database instance. After site setup, the site server computer account must also retain SQL Server sysadmin rights.
Configuration Manager setup requires access to current setup files. Download them beforehand or allow setup to retrieve them from Microsoft. Use Microsoft’s site prerequisite checks as part of the installation process.
Install SQL Server 2019
- Get the installation media. Use the SQL Server 2019 media appropriate for your planned edition and host.
- Start SQL Server Setup. Run
setup.exefrom the installation media. - Open the installation workflow. In SQL Server Installation Center, select Installation, then New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation.
- Complete the SQL Server wizard. Continue through the installer for the edition and instance you have planned. The exact screen choices, service-account design, and storage layout depend on your environment and organizational policy; the Configuration Manager requirements below still apply.
Microsoft’s documented entry point and setup workflow are described in Install SQL Server from the Installation Wizard.

Configure SQL Server for the Configuration Manager site
Set the required collation
The SQL Server instance used by the site and its site database must both use SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. Verify the instance collation during setup and ensure the site database uses the same required collation. See Microsoft’s SQL Server configuration guidance for Configuration Manager.
Use the recommended compatibility level
For SQL Server 2019, Microsoft recommends database compatibility level 150 for Configuration Manager. The recommendation concerns the site database compatibility level; it is not a substitute for meeting the supported SQL Server build requirement.
Choose the recovery model for the availability design
Microsoft’s site database planning guidance calls for SIMPLE recovery when the database is not in an Always On availability group. For an Always On availability group, use FULL recovery. Review the database planning guidance for SQL Server Always On availability groups when planning that topology.
Coordinate SQL connectivity and firewall rules
TCP port 1433 is Microsoft’s documented default for intrasite communication between the SQL Server database engine and site system roles. A deployment can use a different configured port; in that case, make sure SQL Server connectivity and any intervening firewall rules use the actual port. See the Configuration Manager SQL Server configuration guidance.

Run Configuration Manager setup
Once SQL Server is installed and configured, run the Configuration Manager site prerequisite checks, then start site setup from the appropriate current installation source. Confirm the site server can access current setup files and that the required SQL permissions remain in place. The required settings vary with the selected site role, SQL location, and availability design, so verify them against Microsoft’s current documentation for your Configuration Manager release before deployment.
