Windows 10 Event Viewer can show when the system recognized a USB storage device and, if the right auditing was already configured, when a user attempted to access files on removable storage. Those are different kinds of evidence: a device-recognition event does not say what was copied, and file-access events are not a complete record of transferred data.
What Event Viewer can—and cannot—tell you
There are three distinct questions behind “USB activity”:
- Was a USB device recognized? Audit PNP Activity can record recognition of a new external device.
- Was a file or folder on removable storage accessed? Audit Removable Storage can record configured access attempts to file-system objects.
- Exactly what data was transferred? These events do not provide a guaranteed, byte-for-byte reconstruction of files copied or their contents.
Event Viewer shows records that Windows generated under its audit settings and still retains. If auditing was not enabled when the activity happened, or older records have been overwritten or cleared, the absence of an event does not establish that no USB activity occurred. Microsoft explains that the Security log contains events defined by the audit policies set on objects in its Windows 10 Security event log guidance.
Check the Security log for existing events
- Open Event Viewer. You can search for it from the Windows taskbar.
- In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and select Security.
- Look for the event IDs that fit your question: 6416 for device recognition, or 4663 and 4656 for removable-storage access auditing.
- To narrow the list, use Filter Current Log… in the Actions pane and enter the event IDs of interest. Open an event to inspect its General and Details information.
The Security log may contain many kinds of events. Filtering helps, but only events actually generated and retained will appear.

Event 6416: evidence that Windows recognized a device
Event 6416 is associated with Audit PNP Activity. Microsoft describes it as: “A new external device was recognized by the System.” Microsoft’s Windows 10 documentation gives a USB flash drive as an example and also describes events related to device enablement, disablement, and policy restrictions. Use 6416 as evidence of device recognition—not as evidence that a particular file was opened or copied. The event answers whether Windows recognized a new external device; it does not establish which data moved to or from it.

Events 4663 and 4656: audited access to removable storage
Audit Removable Storage covers attempts to access file-system objects on removable storage. Microsoft lists events 4656, 4658, and 4663 for this category. Its monitoring procedure identifies event 4663 as a successful attempt to read from or write to removable storage, and event 4656 as a failed attempt. The task category shown for these events is Removable Storage device. See Microsoft’s Audit Removable Storage and removable-storage monitoring procedure.
Depending on the event details, you may be able to identify the account, object, and type of access attempted. This is useful access evidence, but it does not necessarily prove that a complete file transfer occurred or reveal the contents transferred. A recorded read or write attempt should be interpreted as an audited operation, not a full reconstruction of a user’s activity.

If the access events are missing, check auditing and verify prospectively
A missing 4656 or 4663 event may mean the relevant policy was not enabled, the activity did not match the configured auditing, or the event is no longer retained. To test what the machine records now, use Microsoft’s documented verification approach:
- Configure the applicable advanced audit policy for removable storage. The policy settings determine whether the relevant access attempts generate Security events.
- Refresh policy from an elevated Command Prompt with
gpupdate /force. - Connect a removable storage device and perform a file access attempt that you are authorized to test.
- Return to Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Security and look for event 4663 or 4656. Inspect the event’s account, object, and access information.
Microsoft notes that on some Windows 10 versions, removable-storage auditing may also require the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlStorageHotPlugSecureOpen to be set to 1. This is a version-specific caveat, not a setting that every Windows 10 computer necessarily needs; consult the Microsoft monitoring procedure before changing the registry.

Microsoft also states that Audit Removable Storage can generate events for requested access types on all objects independently of the object’s SACL. Its guidance recommends enabling Failure auditing to record failed access attempts. Policy choices affect the records available, so configure and verify the settings before relying on them for future monitoring.
Choose the method that matches the question

When to use a managed reporting option
For a single PC, Event Viewer is the direct place to inspect locally generated Security events. In an organization that needs centralized device-control reporting, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint has a separate reporting path for media-use audit and policy events. Its availability depends on the organization’s product plan and deployment; do not assume it is present simply because a computer runs Windows 10.
