That confirmed most of a January forecast—including the chip, memory, camera, and support for two external displays—but the launch came later than the January-or-February timing then considered possible. The available evidence does not establish that the Air was Apple’s first product update of the year.
What the January 2025 forecast predicted
On January 15, 2025, MacRumors writer Joe Rossignol said there was a good chance Apple would announce updated 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M4 as its first product announcement of the year. The report cited Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who expected the Air to arrive before some other devices planned for spring and said production was underway. MacRumors considered a January or February announcement possible; those were expectations, not dates confirmed by Apple. MacRumors, January 15, 2025
The preview anticipated an M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 16GB of minimum memory, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, and support for as many as two external displays while the laptop remained open. It also raised the possibility of three Thunderbolt 4 ports and a nano-texture display option. The report did not point to major external design changes. A January 28 roundup from 9to5Mac similarly expected M4, 16GB of standard memory, a 12MP Center Stage camera, two-display support, both screen sizes, and a February or early-March release; it also treated nano-texture as a possibility. 9to5Mac, January 28, 2025
When the M4 MacBook Air came out
Apple announced the 13-inch and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air on March 5, 2025. Pre-orders opened that day, and Apple said availability would begin March 12. So the forecast was right that an updated Air was coming in early 2025, but the January-or-February window MacRumors considered possible was too early. Apple’s March 5, 2025 announcement

U.S. launch prices and Apple’s battery claim
Apple’s March 2025 U.S. launch starting prices were $999 for the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air and $1,199 for the 15-inch model. Apple said the 13-inch starting price was $100 lower than before. These are historical launch figures, not current offers. The announcement also claimed up to 18 hours of battery life; that is Apple’s manufacturer claim, not an independent test result.

The March 5 announcement proves when Apple announced the M4 MacBook Air, but it does not establish the order of every Apple product update that year. The January forecast’s “first” framing should therefore remain a prediction rather than a confirmed outcome. Apple’s release quotes senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak calling MacBook Air “by far the world’s most popular laptop”; that is Apple’s characterization, not an independently verified market-ranking statistic.
