The Intel D7-P5510 is a PCIe 4.0 U.2 enterprise SSD designed for data-center workloads—not a consumer M.2 drive. Solidigm now lists it as discontinued. Its published specifications make it a capable option for compatible servers, but historical benchmark results are not a guarantee of performance in your system, and a used or reseller listing needs careful checks.
What the Intel D7-P5510 is—and who it suits
The D7-P5510 is an enterprise NVMe SSD originally introduced by Intel in December 2020; product stewardship is now under Solidigm, which marks the model discontinued. It is aimed at data-center and server storage workloads where high throughput, random I/O, endurance, and device-management features matter. It is not an M.2 drive for a typical desktop upgrade.
Solidigm’s product brief lists 3.84 TB and 7.68 TB U.2 variants using 144-layer TLC 3D NAND. Verify the precise SKU on any listing: capacities mentioned in third-party coverage or reseller listings may refer to a different model or configuration. Solidigm’s D7-P5510 product page identifies the model and its lifecycle status.
Specifications that matter to a server buyer
| Specification | Manufacturer-stated value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Form factor | U.2, 15 mm | Requires a matching bay, backplane, cabling, and physical clearance. |
| Interface and protocol | PCIe 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3c | The host must support NVMe and provide a compatible PCIe connection. |
| Listed capacities | 3.84 TB and 7.68 TB | Confirm the exact model and capacity on the drive label and listing. |
| NAND | 144-layer TLC 3D NAND | Use the official brief rather than conflicting third-party specification tables. |
| Sequential throughput | Up to 7,000 MB/s read; up to 4,194 MB/s write | Manufacturer maximum specifications, not a promised result in a specific server. |
| 4 KB random performance | Up to 930K read IOPS; up to 190K write IOPS | Actual IOPS depend on workload, queue depth, host, and test conditions. |
| Endurance | Up to 1 drive write per day (DWPD); up to 14 PBW | These are manufacturer ratings; assess them against your expected writes and the exact capacity/SKU. |
| Power | 18 W maximum average active write power; 5 W idle | Plan for the system’s power delivery and cooling envelope. |
| Reliability and warranty | 2 million-hour MTBF; five-year limited warranty stated in the product brief | MTBF is a population-level reliability measure, not a prediction of an individual drive’s life. The brief does not establish warranty coverage for a used or resold unit today. |
These figures are from the Solidigm Intel SSD D7-P5510 Product Brief. Treat “up to” performance as a specification ceiling under applicable conditions, not a substitute for testing your own application and server.
#1 Best Overall
- Is power and energy-efficient to ensure maximum reliability
- Provides fast and dependable access to data and has non-volatile memory
- Store as many documents, pictures and videos as you need with 1.92 TB capacity
- With the stunning reading speed of 6600 MB/s, get faster boot times and improved overall computing performance
- Write speed of 4200 MB/s enables you to perform write-related tasks in seconds rather than minutes
Host compatibility: check the bay before buying
The key compatibility question is physical as well as electrical. The P5510 is U.2 at 15 mm thickness and uses PCIe 4.0 x4/NVMe 1.3c. A server with an M.2 slot, SATA-only bay, or incompatible backplane is not an automatic fit. Confirm the server or storage platform documentation supports U.2 NVMe drives at the required PCIe generation and lane configuration.
- Check that the chassis has an available U.2 15 mm bay and the correct backplane or cabling.
- Confirm the system supports PCIe NVMe storage and can enumerate the drive at the intended interface.
- Check firmware, boot support, and any vendor qualification rules if the drive will be used as a boot device or in a managed array.
- Account for airflow and the drive’s stated power figures in the target chassis.
Performance: published limits versus independent test results
StorageReview’s July 16, 2021 review measured the P5510 in its own lab and workload configurations. In that review’s SQL Server test, it reported 12,645.61 transactions per second (TPS) with 4 ms average latency. In its Sysbench test, it reported 8,561.02 TPS, 14.95 ms average latency, and 28.76 ms at the 99th percentile. These are results from those particular tests and platform—not predictions for another server or workload.

The review also compared the drive with other PCIe Gen4 enterprise SSDs using application workloads and VDBench, describing P5510 results near the leaders in several tests. The review is useful historical evidence, but its 2021 ranking is not a current market comparison. See StorageReview’s Intel D7-P5510 SSD review for its lab details and individual results.
For its own marketing comparison with the prior-generation P4510, Intel reported up to 2× sequential-read performance, 50% lower latency, and 50% higher mixed-workload IOPS. Those comparisons refer to Intel’s tested configurations and October 2020 test dates, not every workload or deployment; details are in the Solidigm product brief.

Endurance and enterprise features
The stated rating of up to 1 DWPD and up to 14 PBW can be a fit for many read-heavy or mixed enterprise workloads, but the right choice depends on write volume, capacity, retention period, and service-life target. Estimate daily writes for the intended workload and compare that estimate with the rating for the exact SKU. Do not treat the upper rating as proof that a particular used drive has remaining endurance.
The brief lists dynamic namespace management, multiple LBA formats, SGL support, enhanced SMART monitoring, device self-test, telemetry, TCG Opal 2.0, namespace locking, sanitize/format, power-loss imminent protection, and end-to-end data-path protection. These features can help with provisioning, monitoring, security, and data integrity. They do not protect against every system-level failure and do not replace backups.

Intel P5510 vs. Samsung PM9A3: make the comparison workload-specific
There is no useful universal winner without comparing matching capacities and configurations. The evidence cited here includes a 2021 P5510 review, but does not establish a same-platform, same-capacity head-to-head result against the Samsung PM9A3. Avoid treating unrelated benchmark tables or headline specifications as a definitive comparison.
For a procurement decision, compare equivalent capacity, interface and form factor, endurance rating, workload mix, queue depth, latency percentile, and test platform. Also verify each drive’s host compatibility and current availability. A result for one capacity or a sequential workload does not settle performance for a different capacity or a latency-sensitive mixed workload.

Buying a discontinued P5510 today
Solidigm’s product page marks the P5510 discontinued and points to the P5520 as a related product. That establishes the lifecycle status, not whether a particular listing is in stock, new, healthy, or covered by warranty. Do not assume the P5520 is a drop-in replacement without independently checking its current specifications, fit, and availability.
Before purchasing a remaining or used unit, verify the exact model and capacity, the seller’s identity, drive usage or health disclosure, return terms, compatibility with your system, and any warranty that applies to that specific item. The product brief’s five-year limited-warranty statement does not establish coverage for a resold drive. Current asking prices, stock, and seller-specific condition vary by listing and are not established by the manufacturer’s discontinued designation.
