A phone camera that will not focus may have a smudged or obstructed lens, a focus point set on the wrong subject, a subject that is too close, or blur caused by dim light or movement. App or hardware problems are also possible. Start by removing anything covering the camera, gently cleaning the glass, tapping your subject to focus, and testing in good light. If the problem persists across camera apps or the lens appears damaged, contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider.
First, work out when the camera loses focus
Test a stationary subject in good light, then change the subject, angle, and lighting. Note whether the blur happens with every subject and camera mode or only at close range, in dim conditions, or in one app. This helps distinguish a general focus problem from a condition that makes a particular shot difficult.
- Only close subjects look blurry: Move the subject farther away and try again.
- Blur happens mainly in dim light or while moving: Try a brighter scene and hold the phone and subject still.
- Only one app has the problem: Test the built-in Camera app and another camera app if available.
- One camera works but another does not: Test the front and rear cameras separately.
Google recommends retesting Pixel camera quality from another angle or in different light. These checks are useful for narrowing down the symptom, but they do not by themselves identify a hardware fault.
Remove anything covering the camera and clean the glass
Temporarily take off the case, lens protector, film, or add-on lens, then take another photo. Look for smudges, dirt, cracks, or condensation on the camera glass. Gently wipe it with a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth; do not use abrasive materials or try to open the phone.

Cases and accessories can block a lens or interfere with focus on some devices. Apple also calls out accessories that place a magnet near the camera, and recommends removing cases, films, or accessories that may obstruct it. Apple’s camera troubleshooting guidance and Google Pixel Camera Help both advise checking and cleaning the camera area.
Set focus on the subject and check its distance
Tap the main subject in the viewfinder and wait for the image to settle before taking the picture. If you use a Pixel and want normal autofocus, make sure Lock focus is off. A locked focus point can leave the camera focused on a different distance than the subject you are trying to photograph.

If the subject is very close, move the phone back and try again. Google’s Pixel focus guidance suggests keeping the subject at least 2 feet (60 cm) away; that is Pixel-specific advice, not a universal minimum for every phone. Google also notes that edges in close-up shots may look soft on some Pixel Pro models because of their larger sensors.
Try brighter light and reduce movement
In low light, a phone may take longer to capture an image, and movement by the phone or subject can make the result look blurry even if autofocus is working. Test in a brighter place, hold the phone steady, and ask a moving subject to pause if possible. Google’s Pixel Night Sight instructions recommend keeping the phone stable.

If motion blur in low light began while using a lens converter, metallic case, or magnetic lens mount, remove that accessory and retest. Apple identifies these accessories as relevant to some low-light motion-blur problems; this does not mean every accessory causes blur.
Restart and update the phone or camera app
A temporary app or software problem can affect camera behavior. Restart the phone, then install available system and camera-app updates. The exact menu names and update steps vary by phone, so use the instructions for your model.

For Pixel phones, Google’s camera app troubleshooting also recommends clearing the Camera app cache and testing in safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is contributing. If the built-in Pixel Camera app works but one third-party app does not, troubleshoot or update that app rather than assuming the camera hardware is faulty. Apple’s iPhone camera steps include restarting the iPhone and installing the latest iOS version available for it.

Seek model-specific support if focus still fails after the checks above, the camera glass is cracked, condensation is visible, or the same problem occurs in more than one camera app. A support provider can assess whether the problem needs repair; the symptoms alone do not establish a particular cause, repair, or cost.

Apple says service may be needed when its camera or flash troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. It also warns that nongenuine replacement cameras can cause focus or sharpness problems, which is not evidence that every independent repair is defective. Google provides repair or support routes for certain camera failures and notes that problems affecting other apps may point to a possible hardware issue. What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Blur is not proof that autofocus itself has failed. A dirty lens, an obstruction, an unintended focus lock, close subject distance, low light, or movement can all produce a soft-looking image. Conversely, persistent focus failure or visible damage merits professional assessment rather than repeated guesses or attempts to disassemble the phone. Apple and Google provide device-specific steps, but their guidance does not establish a universal minimum focusing distance or cover every Android manufacturer.
